The No. 3-ranked Cowley College men's soccer team clinched at least a share of its third straight conference title with a 2-1 win over Dodge City Monday in Arkansas City.
The victory was the 40th in 47 games as head coach of the Tigers for Ruy Vaz as Cowley improves to 8-0 on the season.
"Dodge City had some chances and yesterday was a game for us to lose to be honest, but we used this game as an opportunity to grow as a team and a win is a win," Vaz said.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal by Ryoma Sakamoto. After Dodge City tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by Nathan O'Brien only five minutes into the second half, Cowley regained the lead on a goal by Antonio Peruchi Marra with 30 minutes remaining. The goal was the team-leading seventh of the season for Peruchi Marra.
"Antonio is a phenomenal player," Vaz said. "He is a leader on the field and controls the midfield for us."
The Tigers would make the lead stand up as they out-shot Dodge City 14-3 and controlled the final 30 minutes of the game. The loss drops the Conquistadors' record to 1-5-1 on the season.
Cowley will face a stiff challenge when they play at No. 16-ranked Coffeyville Saturday at 6 p.m. The Red Ravens are 8-2 and atop the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division standings. A win for Cowley and they clinch the outright conference title in the Jayhawk West, while a win for Coffeyville and they clinch the Jayhawk East title.
"Coffeyville is a good rival and is a very aggressive team," Vaz said. "It will be a war. These are the kinds of games we live for."
