The second setter of Barton's 6-2 offensive attack, Alyssa Herter had a solid weekend helping Barton to .408 attack percentage in the six sets played. Posting a double-double eighteen assists and eleven digs in her collegiate debut against Southeast, Herter followed with another thirteen assists against host Hesston College while adding two digs and three service aces.
Division I Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Hanna Miller played four of the six sets on Friday as Barton's libero, recording ten digs in the season opener against Southeast before posting an eleven dig effort against Hesston College as the freshman helped Barton's defense hold its two opponents to a combined .005 attack percentage.
Division II Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week
Cassidy Crist, Kansas City Kansas Community College, Sophomore Outside Hitter, Shawnee, KS - Sophomore Cassidy Crist started the season on a tear for the Kansas City Lady Blue Devils. Compiling 34 kills in three sets, she is averaging an astonishing 4.85 kills per set. She is also averaging 3.85 digs per set as a six rotation force. The Blue Devils lost a tough match to No. 14-ranked Lincoln Land when one of the team's only two middles went down and the team had to put an outside hitter in the middle position for most of the match.
Division II Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
McKayla Long, Hesston College, Freshman Defensive Specialist, Highland, CA - McKayla Long recorded 17 digs in her first collegiate match for Hesston College in 3-0 loss versus Southeast Community College. Overall, she averaged 12.5 digs per match in the team's two game triangular to open the season.
Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Eriel West, Independence, was supposed to be the starting 2-guard but was thrown into the point guard position due to an injury prior to the first game. She did an impressive job as a freshman and her first two college games. She also guarded the opponent's best guards and did a great job defensively. She averaged 18.0 points last week shooting 48% from the floor and 55% from three.
Division I Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week
Matt Mayers' first career start as a Blue Dragon had another first attached to it – his first career double-double. Mayers, 6-7 sophomore forward from Hastings-On-Hudson, NY, had career highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds in No. 17 Hutchinson's 89-71 season-opening victory over Seminole State on Friday night at the Sports Arena. Mayers turned in a tremendous all-around game. He was 6 of 9 shooting overall, including a 3-pointers, and was 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. In addition to his career high in rebounds, Mayers added two blocked shots, two steals and an assist.
Division II Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week
Kansas City Kansas guard Deron McDaniel got his sophomore season off to strong start averaging 24.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals in the Blue Devils two games last week. He opened the season with a career-high 32-point effort in a hard-fought double-overtime loss to No. 6-ranked North Central Missouri. He hit 8-of-15 shots with four 3-pointers, and 12-of-13 free throws. He also had four rebounds, five assists and three steals. He capped the week with 17 points and three assists in a 74-66 win over Central. He knocked down 5-of-8 shots behind the arc, tying his second highest total of his career. He shot 50 percent from 3-point range in the two games.
