KJCCC Conference Athletes of the Week, Week 7, 2021
(KJCCC) March 10, 2021 – Exceptional efforts by conference athletes lead to recognition in Week 7 of the KJCCC Athletes of the Week voting.
Division II Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week
Sophomore Guard Tiara Earnest led the #5 Blue Devils to a 3-0 week averaging 17.6 points per game while adding 6.6 rebounds per contest. In two conference match ups Earnest scored 20 points in each game while also gaining a double-double against Highland Community College. Earnest shot nearly 48% from the field and 43% from behind the arch on the week.
Division II Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week
Johnson County sophomore forward Jaland Whitehead averaged a double-double of 16.3 points and 12.7 rebounds while leading the No. 3-ranked Cavaliers to three victories last week, two on the road. He also shot 64 percent from the field and blocked five shots. Overall this season Whitehead averages a double-double of 14.4 points and 12.2 rebounds, which leads the conference.
Division I Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week
Le'Yanna McGinnis was the key to Cloud County's success this past week, helping the T-Birds to a pair of wins in contests that she played in. Opening the week with a make-up contest against Garden City, McGinnis would score 17 points and haul in a career-high 14 rebounds to lead CCCC past the Broncbusters 60-53 despite getting injured late in the contest. After missing Wednesday's home loss against Independence due to injury, McGinnis would be back in the lineup for Cloud County on Saturday at Neosho, pouring in a career-best 29 points on 12-of-18 shooting in just 27 minutes of action. The Olathe, Kansas native now leads the KJCCC in scoring at 18.4 points per game and is third in rebounding at 9.5 rebounds per contest while ranking 17th nationally in points per game and 38th in rebounding.
Division I Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week
DeeJuan Pruitt, freshman forward from Sacramento, Ca, had a big week leading the Grizzlies to two more wins. Pruitt scored 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds in the mid-week game against Neosho. He followed that performance up with a 25-point performance on the road at Allen on Saturday. Pruitt shot 56% from the floor, 50% from deep and 92% from the free throw line on the week. He is averaging 14.3 points per game this season and shooting 61% on the year and 56% from three.
Division I Volleyball Athletes of the Week
Offense: Mylena Testoni (Barton)
Mylena Testoni posted consecutive double-double performances contributing to Barton's trio of wins this week. Attacking at .375 clip for the week, Testoni concluded her week with career highs 19 kills and 32 digs on an efficient .485 percentage. Testoni also added four blocks, six service aces, and six assists on the week.
Setter: Isabella Guedes (Barton) and Ileim Terrero (Seward County)
Isabella Guedes notched her third straight double-double leading Barton to a trio wins, including a career high 35 assists and 17 digs in a pivotal conference race with nationally receiving votes Hutchinson Community College. In addition to her leading the offense and contributing to the defense, Guedes also served up four aces on the week.
Ileim Terrero averaged 9.8 assists per set in last weeks matches for the Lady Saints and had a hitting percentage of .500 with 4 kills. Terrero had 30 assists in a 3-0 victory over Independence Community College and followed it up with a 29 assists match against Colby to help Seward to another 3-0 win. She also tallied a season high 15 digs in the match against the Trojans last Thursday.
Defense: Hanna Miller (Barton)
Libero Hanna Miller helped lead Barton's backline in a trio of wins with double-digit digs against just three service receive errors in the fourteen sets played.
Division II Volleyball Athletes of the Week
KJCCC Division II Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week
Mikayla Powell, Johnson County Community College Sophomore, Right Side Hitter, Raymore, MO - Johnson County sophomore right-side hitter Mikayla Powell was the Cavaliers top hitter last week. She tallied 36 kills in three conference wins, an average of 3.6 kills per set, and had a hitting percentage of .388. She also collected 10 digs. Powell has been in double figures for kills in all 10 of the matches she has played. She currently needs four kills to top 500 for her career.
KJCCC Division II Volleyball Setter of the Week
Adriana Velez, Kansas City Kansas Community College Sophomore Setter, Bayamon, Puerto Rico - Sophomore setter Adriana Velez averaged an astounding 11.6 assists per set and 3.3 digs per set in Kansas City's three matches on the week. Her total number of assists for the week was 130. She helped the Lady Blue Devils knock off No. 7-ranked Highland, while losing to fourth-ranked Johnson County by a total of nine points in four sets before losing a five-set heartbreaker to Allen County.
KJCCC Division II Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Kelcey Hund, Kansas City Kansas Community College Freshman Libero, Leavenworth, KS - Freshman Libero Kelcey Hund had a fantastic week for the Blue Devils. She averaged more than six digs per set and passed a cumulative 2.6 in the three matches. Her solid play helped Kansas City upset No. 7-ranked Highland. Hund is currently ranked 11th in the country in total number of digs.
Division I Softball Athletes of the Week
Player: Laney Shireman (Colby) - Laney Shireman was instrumental in CCC going 6-0 for the week. Her at-bats and flawless defense helped Colby achieve a perfect week.
Pitcher: Taylor Sheppard (Colby) - Taylor Sheppard was Colby's ace for the week, earning three victories by striking out twelve and allowing just three runs in eighteen innings of work.

Morgan Schmidt, Labette Community College Freshman Centerfielder, Moore, OK - Morgan Schmidt has been a spark for the Cardinal line-up this season, and she had a great week at the plate; hitting .692 with nine stolen bases, three extra base hits, and an on base percentage of .846 in the lead-off spot.
KJCCC Division II Softball Pitcher of the Week
Katelyn Kotlarz, Labette Community College Freshman Pitcher, Mt. Vernon, MO - Katelyn Kotlarz has gotten off to a terrific start to her career with the Cardinals. She is 5-0 on the season with two big wins over NEO A&M, and all five wins against DI NJCAA programs. She added to her record with two more wins this week against Pratt and Independence.
Baseball Athlete of the Week
Kory Schmidt had a monster week for the Conquistadors as they went 5-0 for the week. Schmidt went 10-15 with four home runs, six walks, and only three strikeouts. He led the Conqs for the week with 13 runs scored and 11 RBIs.
Kolby Dougan once again showed that no moment has been too big for the freshman in the opening month of the season as the Topeka, Kansas native led Cloud County to a series opening win over #10 Cowley on Thursday afternoon. Getting the start against an undefeated Tiger squad that entered the game averaging 20.5 runs per contest, Dougan shut down Cowley to allow just one run on four hits in five innings of work as the T-Birds rolled to a 12-3 series opening win. The victory would set the tone for Cloud County for the rest of the weekend as CCCC would split a four-game series with the Tigers.
