KJCCC Conference Athletes of the Week, Week 11, 2021
(KJCCC) April 7, 2021 – Big-time plays and days by our conference athletes that lead to recognition in Week 10 of the KJCCC Athletes of the Week voting.
Football Athletes of the Week
Offense - Jordan Ford, Garden City
Garden City running back Jordan Ford averaged almost 11 yards per carry in Garden City's record-breaking win over Fort Scott. The Broncbusters broke the school record for points scored. Ford had a major hand in that scoring three touchdowns including a 63-yard dash in the second quarter. He's currently second in the NJCAA in rushing yards.

Defense - Jonathan Huggins, Garden City
Garden City defenisve back Jonathan Huggins provided a major spark on both sides of the ball on Saturday against Fort Scott, recording six tackles, a fumble recovery and a spectacular one-handed interception in the second half. The transfer from Florida also scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Special Teams - Jalik Thomas, Hutchinson
Hutchinson Community College Community College freshman return specialist Jalik Thomas made perhaps one of the biggest momentum-shifting plays in the No. 1 Blue Dragons' 41-10 win over Butler with a school-record 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. After Butler kicked a field goal to cut the Hutch lead to 14-3, Thomas took the ensuing kickoff 1-yard deep in the end zone and sprinted through the coverage team of the Grizzlies for a touchdown. NCAA statistical rules don't acknowledge yardage on kickoff returns from the end zone, so Thomas will have an unbreakable school record.

Division II Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week
Johnson County freshmen center Nyayien Koang played a role in helping the No. 1 ranked Lady Cavaliers complete the regular season undefeated. She came in off the bench to post season-highs for points with 14 and rebounds with seven, to lead JCCC to a 64-58 win at No. 8 Labette Wednesday night. She hit 86 percent from the floor, making 6-of-7 shots.
Division II Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week
Johnson County sophomore forward Jaland Whitehead posted a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds in the Cavaliers final regular season game. Whitehead made 9-of-14 shots for 64 percent. For the season, Whitehead is averaging a double-double of 14.1 points and 11.9 rebounds. He has 12 double-doubles in 18 games played this year. Whitehead leads the conference in rebounding, ranks third in field goal accuracy at 56 percent and second in blocks with 30.
Division I Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week
Queen Ulabo nearly averaged a double-double helping Barton secure the second seed out of the Jayhawk West. Bagging 11 points and grabbing 8 rebounds on Monday, Ulabo helped the Cougars secure a season sweep over the West Champions and 20 th ranked Hutchinson before posting her 8 th double-double of the year in a dominant win over Dodge City to conclude the regular season.
Division I Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week
Desean Munson, Barton
Barton forward Desean Munson posted back-to-back double-doubles last week helping the Cougars knock off the teams ahead of them in the conference race to lock up a second place finish in the Jayhawk West Conference with wins over Hutchinson and Dodge City. Munson shot 61 percent from the field in averaging 14.5 points and 14 rebounds per contest.

Division I Women's Soccer Athletes of the Week
Player: Corrine Hughes (KCK CC)
Sophomore forward Corrine Hughes had an assist on the Blue Devils first goal then delivered the game winning goal as KCKCC was victorious 2-1 at #11 nationally ranked Cowley College.
Goalkeeper:
Freshman Nia Baker turned back four shots in Barton's season opener on the road, earning her first collegiate victory and shutout protecting the net in the Cougars' 1-0 victory at Coffeyville Community College.
Division II Women's Soccer Athletes of the Week

Division I Men's Soccer Athletes of the Week
Felipe D'Agnostic scored the game winning goal in his Cougar debut, later providing the assist for an insurance goal helping lead Barton to a season opening 4-2 win at Coffeyville.
Dante Curin rejected six Coffeyville shots on Friday helping Barton to the season opening victory on the road to secure his first collegiate win in net.
Division II Men's Soccer Athletes of the Week
Hesston sophomore forward Baldo Moreno started his season off with an assist and game winning goal in a 2-1 win over Central Christian JV.
Hesston freshman goalkeeper Aiden McGonagle recorded 18 saves and finished with a save percentage of .857 in his first start and game of his collegiate career. McGonagle had many spectacular saves to keep the Larks in the game.
Division I Volleyball Athletes of the Week
Player: Mylena Testoni (Barton CC)
Mylena Testoni helped lead Barton to its first Region VI title since 2011 with a sweep through the playoffs in earning the program's nation leading 21st national tournament appearance. Attacking at a .327 clip, the region's leader in efficiency also recorded three double-doubles in averaging 4.27 kills and 5.09 digs per set while adding six blocks at the net.
Setter: Isabella Guedes (Barton CC)
Isabella Guedes helped lead Barton to its first Region VI title since 2011 with a sweep through the playoffs in earning its nation leading 21st national tournament appearance. Directing the 6-2 offense, Guedes averaged 6.81 assists per set and recorded two double-double efforts for her 10th and 11th of the freshman's season.
Defensive: Hanna Miller (Barton CC)
Freshman Hanna Miller led Barton's backline of defense with 5.54 digs per set on numerous clutch saves helping lead Barton to its first Region VI title since 2011 with a sweep through the playoffs to earn the program's nation leading 21st national tournament appearance.
Division II Volleyball Athletes of the Week
KJCCC Division II Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week
Mikayla Powell, Johnson County, Sophomore Right-side Hitter, Raymore, MO - Johnson County right-side hitter Mikayla Powell tallied 43 kills and a hitting percentage of .607 over three victories last week, helping the 5th-ranked Lady Cavaliers win the NJCAA Region VI/District M D-II Championship. Powell tallied 27 kills in the championship, with an impressive kill percentage of .667. She now has 654 career kills, which ranks her 12th all-time at JCCC. Powell currently ranks second in the conference with a kill percentage of .365.
KJCCC Division II Volleyball Setter of the Week
Kallie Fenscke, Johnson County Sophomore Setter, Broken Arrow, OK - Johnson County sophomore setter Kallie Fenscke tallied 86 assists and averaged 7.8 assists-per-set over three victories last week, helping the 5th-ranked Lady Cavaliers win the NJCAA Region VI/District M D-II Championship. In the two-game championship, Fenscke had 26 assists against Coffeyville, and 27 in the title match against Kansas City Kansas. She now has 1,229 career assists, which places her 15th on JCCC all-time chart. She began the week with 33 assists in a five-set win at Cowley.
KJCCC Division II Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Makenize Griffel, Johnson County Community College Sophomore Libero, Blue Springs, Mo - Johnson County sophomore libero Makenzie Griffel tallied 45 digs over three victories last week, helping the 5th-ranked Lady Cavaliers win the NJCAA Region VI/District M D-II Championship. For the season, she has registered 433 total digs which ranks third in the Kansas Jayhawk D-II Conference. Her 4.76 digs-per-set average ranks fifth. With each match, Griffel continues to move up the all-time charts at JCCC. Her 717 career digs have her at No. 15 all-time.

Division I Softball Athletes of the Week
Pitcher: Maddie Redman (Butler CC)
Maddie Redman, sophomore pitcher from Stillwell, OK, picked up three wins last week for the No. 4 ranked Grizzlies improving to 9-0 on the season. Redman was the game one starter in each of the Grizzlies three KJCCC double headers last week. Redman pitched a total of 14 innings during the week allowing just nine hits and three runs, two of which were earned. She gave up just one walk and struck out 21 batters on the week. Redman has an ERA of 1.38 in her 40.2 innings pitched this season.
Player: Hannah Knox (Butler CC)
Hannah Knox, sophomore pitcher from Lindale, TX, hit .600 last week and hit three grand slams, had four doubles and 19 RBI's helping the No. 4-ranked Grizzlies to six more KJCCC wins. Knox finished with four homeruns on the week, three of which went for grand slams against Dodge City on Tuesday. She had a season high nine RBI's in game two against Dodge City. Knox also pitched eight innings for the Grizzlies last week appearing in three games. She gave up just six hits, zero runs scored, walked one and struck out three. Knox is batting .470 on the season and is one of four Grizzlies with seven homeruns on the year.
Division II Softball Athletes of the Week
KJCCC Division II Softball Player of the Week
Savannah Maynard, Kansas City Kansas Community College Freshman Shortstop, Vermillion, OH - Freshman shortstop Savannah Maynard helped Kansas City go 8-0 on the week by batting .500 (13-of-26) with a home run, seven doubles, and 14 runs batted in. She also walked five times and scored 12 runs.
KJCCC Division II Softball Pitcher of the Week
Bradi Basler, Kansas City Kansas Community College Freshman, Lansing, KS - Bradi Basler went 5-0 on the week and struck out 21 batters over 27 1/3 innings pitched. She helped her cause at the plate by going 12-for-24 with 13 runs batted in.
Baseball Athlete of the Week
Wyatt Grant had the best week of his career with a .714 batting average, five home runs, and had 13 RBI's. Grant helped Seward County to a 5-0 week and the Saints are currently on an eight-game winning streak. Grant leads the conference in home runs this season with 12 home runs and third in the conference with 39 runs batted in this season. Grant also provides great defense from behind the plate with 22 putouts this week, had a 1.000 fielding percentage.
Coffeyville Red Raven freshman right hander Scout Huggins pitched a gem against Barton going 7 strong innings scattering 5 hits while striking out 8. Huggins also pitched in relief earlier in the week pitching 1 2/3 innings in a 10-6 win over Highland. For the week, Huggins went 8 2/3 innings with 11 strikeouts.
