Indy comes up empty on big offensive day

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - The Independence Softball team was able to create some noise offensively but dropped another pair of games to Allen on Wednesday afternoon, 7-5 and 18-12.

In game one, Allen jumped out to a quick early lead with single runs in the first two innings, before a three spot in the third inning  eventually led to a 6-0 lead in the fourth. Indy began to chip away with an RBI single from Riley Hayes in the bottom of the fourth, and was able to cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, the second coming on an RBI single from Alexis Yarnell.

Indy’s rally had some legs in the seventh inning as the first three batters all reached safely and brought the tying run to the plate. An error and an RBI single from Bryndl Biggs would cut the Allen lead in half at 7-5. Sarah Wrape singled to load the bases once again but a strikeout left the tying run stranded on second base, resulting in the game one defeat.

Madyson Paxton and Sarah Wrape each had two hits in the game, and Taylor Nixon reached base twice and scored two runs. Wrape took the loss in the circle, surrendering 10 hits and five earned runs in seven innings of work.

In game two, both teams came out of gates with hot bats as Allen plated two in the top of the first. Independence answered with five runs of their own, and took their first lead of the day on an RBI single from Taybor Rardin. The scoring was only just beginning, as Allen tied the game back up in the top half of the second inning. Indy would regain the lead in the bottom half, as Alexis Yarnell would score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Juliann Kindle. Allen would plate one in the top of the third, before breaking the game open with six runs in the fourth to double up the Pirates at 12-6. Indy would continue to battle, as back to back RBI singles from Rardin and Kynleigh Henson helped cut the Allen lead in half at 12-9. The two teams matched each other in the fifth inning with two runs apiece followed by a three run sixth inning for Allen to push the lead to 17-11. Indy was able to scratch across one more run as Alexis Yarnell lined a single to left to score Hensen. Allen would add a run of their own in the seventh before retiring the side in the bottom half leading to the 18-12 final.

Alexis Yarnell had a monster game going 5 for 5 with three RBI and four runs scored. Juliann Kindle and Taybor Rardin each had a pair of runs driven in, and Madison Wammock had a multi-hit game in the loss.

Indy now shifts their focus to Saturday where they will take on Montgomery County rival Coffeyville at home, first pitch set for 1:00 pm.
