Getting goals from six players, the No. 17-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team blasted Garden City 7-1 Wednesday on its newly installed turf soccer field in Arkansas City.
"The girls were excited to play on the new turf," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "The girls felt really comfortable on the turf, it felt like home."
After 19 scoreless minutes, Cowley got goals from Natalia Lima and Bea Medeiros in a 42-second span to get the Lady Tigers off and rolling. Gabrielle Oliveria would score the first of her two goals 16 minutes later to increase Cowley's lead to 3-0.
In the closing minutes of the first half Miranda Cardona scored on Garden City's lone shot of the half as the Broncbusters pulled within 3-1 at halftime.
Cowley's Elsa Pelicant opened the scoring in the second half and the Lady Tigers would get goals from Manuela Oliveira and Iku Asari, as well as a second goal by Gabrielle Oliveria to cruise to the 7-1 win.
"It is good that we do not have to rely on one goal scorer," Dos Santos said.
With the game in hand, Cowley turned to back up goalkeeper Alba Martinez to play the second half.
"The girls were motivated not to lose this first game on our home field and their confidence continues to grow," Dos Santos said.
With Barton County tying Hutchinson on Wednesday, Cowley is now alone in first place in the Jayhawk Conference Western Division. The Lady Tigers are now 9-1-1 overall and 8-1 in the Jayhawk West.
The loss by Garden City drops the Broncbusters' record to 5-9 overall and 2-8 in the Jayhawk West.
Cowley will look to make it four wins in a row when they host Coffeyville Saturday at 2 p.m. The Lady Red Ravens (7-5) are in second place in the Jayhawk East with a conference record of 6-3.
"It will be another good battle as neither team can afford to lose in the conference," Dos Santos said.
