T-Bird (BB) Splits Saturday Against DC3 & WC

NMJC split the Saturday series with a win over Dodge City and a loss to No. 11 Weatherford College. 

Game 3

The T-Birds picked up their first win of the weekend 13-2 against Dodge City.  

The Thunderbirds scored runs in all four innings that they batted against the Conqs. The T-Birds scored two runs in the top of the first on a fielder choice by Callum Donnelly and a single by Brian Guzman to tie the score at 2-2. Jesus Mejias drove in three runs with two outs on single into right field giving NMJC a 5-2 lead after the first. 

NMJC loaded up the bases in the second and scored a run on a hit by pitch and a walk to push the lead to 7-2 T-Birds. Donnelly drove in another run on a single to center to put NMJC up 8-2 after three innings.

NMJC scored five runs in the fourth via an RBI double by Guzman, an RBI single by Mejias, and an inside the park homer run by Jeter Battles that scored two to make the score 13-2 after four innings of play.

The T-Birds run ruled the Conqs by the same margin after five innings.   

Center fielder Callum Donnelly was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Right fielder Brian Guzman went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Third baseman Jesus Mejias batted 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored. Shortstop Jeter Battles was 1-for-2 with a walk, a homer, and three RBIs

Brayan Orrantia pitched five innings while striking out seven. The sophomore starter allowed one hit and no earned runs to pick up his third win of the season.

The Thunderbirds ended Game 3 with nine hits and six errors.  

Game 4

No. 11 Weatherford College's 11-run sixth inning overwhelms the T-Birds as they drop the final game of the series 23-7.

The Coyotes took the lead in the first inning after scoring on an error. NMJC DH Julius Ramirez hit a solo homer in the bottom of the first to tie the score.

The T-Birds scored five runs in the second on an RBI triple by Casen Savage, a sac fly by Jeter Battles, an RBI single by Lane Arroyos, and 2-run homer by Ramirez, his second of the day which gave NMJC a 6-1 lead at the end of the second inning.

The Thunderbirds surrendered 11 runs over the next three innings and only scored once in the fifth on a sac fly which made the T-Bird deficit 12-7. Weatherford shelled NMJC in the top of the sixth scoring 11 unanswered runs to run rule NMJC 23-7.  

Second baseman Jorge De Los Santos went 2-for-4 with a run scored. DH Julius Ramirez was 2-for-4 with two homers, three RBIs, and two runs scored.

Catcher Lachlan Maude was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Center fielder Casen Savage recorded an RBI triple and a run scored.

The Thunderbirds allowed 14 hits, 14 earned runs, and walked 18 batters in the game.

NMJC ended the weekend 8-6 and will face local USW (JV) Monday, Feb. 17 at 2:30 p.m. MST at Ray Birmingham Field in Hobbs, NM.
