McClellan, Andres-Dougan highlight Cowley performances at Herm Wilson Invite

The Cowley College men and women's track and field teams took a limited number of athletes to compete at the Herm Wilson Invite held Friday and Saturday inside Wichita State University's Heskett Center. Among the notable performances were Lady Tiger sophomore Kayla McClellan winning the weight throw and men's sophomore Diego Andres-Dougan placing first in the triple jump and winning his heat in the 60-meter hurdles.

"We were pleased with the competition because the best way for us to sharpen up is by competing," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said.

McClellan placing first in the weight throw with a national qualifying toss of 49-0 ¾.

"Coach (Glenwood) Edwards has been really high on her," Rieth said. "We have just been waiting for a performance like this and Saturday was the day she put it all together. It is big for her to get the national qualifying mark out of the way."

Andres-Dougan, the current school record holder in the triple jump, placed first in the triple jump (48-2 ½) and the initial heat of the 60-meter hurdles. He hit national qualifying marks in both events.

"This was Diego's hurdles debut for the indoor season and he picked up where he left off from last year," Rieth said.

Cowley will now gear up to compete at the Pittsburg State University Gorilla Classic Friday and Saturday in Pittsburg, KS. Only athletes in the top-40 marks in the field events and top-60 times in the running events will be allowed to compete at Pittsburg State.

"It will be good to see how we stack up with regionals just around the corner," Rieth said.
