Lady Conqs Overmatched in Home Opener

The anticipation of a long-awaited home opener was cut short by the defending Jayhawk champions, Butler Community College.

Led by the 15 first quarter points of Grizzlies guard Skyla Knight, Butler jumped out to a 29-8 lead that only increased.

The Grizzlies would keep their foot on the gas and take a 51-18 lead into halftime.

The Lady Conquistadors were led in scoring by Emery Maze's nine points and five rebounds, as well as Keimora Banks' eight points and five rebounds. Though the Conqs only score 39 points, they finished the contest with 13 assists on 16 made baskets to go with 11 players in the scoring column.

The Lady Conquistadors also found themselves with six players registering a steal on their way to 10 steals for the contest led by sophomore Madison Gissendanner's five.

"Against good teams like Butler, you can't let them race out to a 21-point lead and expect to get back in the game," said head coach Zach Loll. "We can't dwell on this game. We have to learn from it and be ready to travel to Cloud on Wednesday."

The Lady Grizzlies were led by Skyla Knight's 24 points, four rebounds, four assists, and six steals. The trio of Paris Mullins, Kaylee Nero, and NJCAA All-American Tamara Nard inside for the Grizzlies overpowered the Lady Conqs post players with 35 points and 23 rebounds. Freshman guard Cameren Downs paced the Grizzlies with seven assists as they garnered 22 assists on 34 made baskets.

The Lady Conquistadors are back in action on Wednesday, February 3rd as they hit the road to Concordia, Kansas to take on Cloud County Community College. The conference double-header will begin with the women's game tipping off at 6:00 pm CST, with the men immediately following.
