Garden City falls in four to rival Dodge City
Garden City, KS-This was a missed opportunity.
Azra Arslanoglu had nine kills and 16 digs, Hayden Pinard added 26 assists, and Dodge City upended Garden City in four sets, 22-25, 25-17, 20-25, 19-25 Saturday night at Conestoga Arena.
Julia Brazil recorded 19 kills for the Broncbusters (10-8, 4-5 KJCCC), which tied a season-high with 37 attack errors. Carly Lang and Vitoria Stedile each chipped in 17 digs.
Garden City held a 20-19 lead late in the opening set. But a net violation on the Broncbusters followed by Beatriz Cornachini's block of a Garden City attack and Pinard's kill sparked a 6-3 run to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.
The Broncbusters though bounced back, thoroughly dominating the early stages of the second frame. They opened up a 7-2 lead but watched as Dodge City rattled off a 9-3 surge to tie the game at 12. After the teams exchanged rallies, the Broncbusters took the lead for good thanks to an emphatic block by Katarina Miscevic that fueled a 12-4 run to close the set.
Garden City led briefly in the third before Dodge City built a 15-5 advantage on the heels of a 14-3 run that was capped by Amariah White's kill. However, most of that surge by the Conquistadors was aided by a match-high 11 Broncbuster attack errors in the game.
In the fourth, Garden City held a 13-12 edge midway through the set. But Arslanoglu pounded home a pair of kills, Gaby Santos sent an attack wide, White hammered home a spike, and Dodge City finished the match on a 13-6 sprint.
Keisey Keli'I had 19 digs for the Conquistadors, which won their third straight match to improve to 16-10 overall and 7-2 in league play.
Lang recorded 10 kills for Garden City, and Kinnley Flower tallied 16 assists and three aces.
