Dowell scores 22 as Highland Cruises Past KCK

After being handed their first conference loss to Johnson County Monday night, the Scottie women were itching to get back out on the floor. They came out firing as they rolled to a 70-53 victory over the reigning NJCAA National Champions, Kansas City Kansas CC.

After a back and forth 1st quarter, the Scotties took control in the 2nd out-scoring the Blue Devils 26-11 and taking a 43-25 lead into the break.

The 3rd quarter put the cap on the night as Highland knocked down four three-pointers and held the Blue Devils to only 28% from the floor and 0-5 from three in the 3rd to carry a 25 point lead into the final quarter.

A sloppy 4th offensively for Highland didn't matter as they went on to defeat the Blue Devils 70-53.

"I'm kind of a streaky shooter when I'm off I'm off and when I'm on I'm on, and tonight, I was on," commented sophomore Jameka Dowell, Lebanon, TN, in her post-game interview after her best shooting night of the season knocking down six three-pointers on her way to a game high 22 points. Mariane Carvalho added 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and five steals on the night. Tiana Cook led the game in rebounds pulling down 11 boards, five offensive as well as four points and three assists.

Coach BJ Smith on Wednesday night's performance, "We are still finding our way a little bit. It was a little better effort and we cleaned some things up on the defensive end but were still not clicking on all pistons like we should but it was a better effort than Monday night."

The Scotties will play game No. 3 on the week this Saturday as they travel to Salina, KS to take on Region VI opponent Brown Mackie College. That game will be held at St. John's Military in Salina at 2:00pm. Highland is now 18-2 on the year, 1-1 in conference play and 2-1 in Region play.
