Saints sweep Colby in slugfest, 14-10 and 19-16

COLBY, Kan. – The Seward County Community College baseball team posted its first conference doubleheader sweep of the season with come-from-behind, slugfest victories, 14-10 and 19-16, at Colby Community College on Thursday.

The Saints improved to 5-13 in the Jayhawk West and 18-23 overall. Seward hosts Colby on Saturday at Brent Goud Field to wrap up the four-game series. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and admission is free.

 

GAME ONE

The Saints battled back from a six-run deficit and took the lead with a three-run, sixth inning to rally past Colby, 14-10, in the opener.

Seward fell behind early with Colby scoring seven times in the second inning and adding another run in the third for an 8-2 lead. The Saints offense finally awoke, scoring eight runs in the fourth inning, sending 12 batters to plate and taking a 9-8 advantage. Hayden Ramage's three-run homer and Kotaro Wakui's two-run single highlighted the outburst.

After the Trojans knotted the game with a run in the fifth inning at 9-9, the Saints took the lead for good with three runs in the sixth. Grant Cox broke the tie with an RBI double and Emry Cairns hit a two-run homer to cap the inning. Seward added a final run in the seventh for the 14-10 final score.

Cross Durham pitched strong in relief, bailing out a depleted Seward bullpen. Durham, who has struggled this season, allowed three runs on six hits, struck out three and walked two over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win.

Ramage went 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored and Cairns added three hits, drove in three runs and scored twice for the Saints.

 

GAME TWO

It was another back-and-forth offensive rumble between Seward and Colby with the Saints surviving for the 19-16 win over the Trojans in the nightcap.

Similar to the first game, Colby jumped out to a 7-1 lead with a seven-run, first inning and Seward countered with an eight-run, fourth inning to grab a 9-7 advantage. The teams kept trading runs and the lead with Colby ahead, 15-14, after the seven innings.

The Saints went ahead with two runs in the eighth inning and added insurance in the ninth with a three-run blast by Blaine Chancy at 19-15. The Trojans loaded the bases with one run in the ninth, but Koshiro Ohno got the final out for the save and give the SCCC the 19-16 win. John Langehennig allowed four runs over 2 2/3 innings in relief to post the win.

Chancy drove in four runs and Nathan Hopkins, Kotaro Wakui and Emry Cairns each had three RBI and Ryan Todd and Hayden Ramage each had four hits to power the Saints, who pounded out a 26-hit attack.
