Dotse's consolation run highlights 13th ranked Barton women's tennis run at Nationals #GoBarton
Freshman Vania Dotse's run to the No. 1 singles consolation highlights Cougars at Nationals.
A short-handed 13th ranked Barton Community College women's tennis team placed 19th recently at the 2025 NJCAA Division I National Tennis Championships held at the JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center in Tyler, Texas.
Overall, the four-member Cougar squad combined for a 8-9 record over their four days of action leading to a team's overall finish.
Freshman No. 1 slot player Vania Dotse was on the doorstep of a consolation title to cap the week, rebounding from an opening round defeat to win three backside matches before leading 4-0 in a suspended championship match, surrendering the potential victory on the following day to Kasey Blagg of Southwestern Illinois College. Dotse had tumbled to the stay-alive portion of the bracket after a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to 5th seeded Rima Yoshida of St. Petersburg College with the Titan going on to lose in the semifinals to the top seed.
Dotse then disposed of Bevill State's Ady Preston in a quick 8-0 match before registering a pair of 8-2 wins over Coastal Alabama's Emily Gubach and USC-Sumter's Maeva Chambon respectively.
Also making a run in the consolation, No. 4 player Salalee Seejong reached the semifinals in having the freshman's season end on an 8-2 defeat to Lauren Sullivan of Mississippi Gulf Coast. Seejong was bounced to the consolation following a twin 6-1 set loss to USC-Sumter's Pawarapa Thaimuangphol then defeated Meridian's Lily Hollingsworth 9-7 to reach the semifinals.
Vitoria Campigotto picked up a pair of No. 2 singles victories, opening with a pair of 6-2 set wins over Julia Fillat of Mercer County before eliminating Iowa Central's Silvia Fernandez De La Pradilla 6-3, 6-2. The freshman's run would end in the quarterfinal 6-0, 6-1 to 3rd seeded Sydney Stark of Hillsborough who would drop the title match in three sets to the top seed.
In the No. 3 slot, Diana Souza dropped identical 6-1 set scores to Mississippi Gulf Coast's Isona Arnaus before having her Cougar singles career end on the bottom side of a tough 8-6 loss to Weatherford's Rosmary Pena.
Dotse and Capigotto got off to a good start in the No. 1 doubles pairings with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Meridian's Reine Akombo and Daisi Kukuljan but met the top seeded and eventual national champion pair of Hillsborough's Catherine Goldman and Sydney Stark in the Round of 16 resulting in 6-2 set defeats.
A similar fate awaited for Souza and Seejong in the No. 2 doubles, winning the first match 6-0, 6-2 over Bevill State's Jasmine Rivera and Ella Thatcher before having the season end to the 8th seeded Josefina Bailetti and Otoha Mogi from Region 6 member Seward County on a pair of 6-0 set losses.
