The Cowley College women's soccer team scored three goals in the final 23 minutes of its season-opening game at Allen Community College on Saturday as they pulled away to defeat the Lady Red Devils 4-0.
"The team was a little nervous with it being the first game, but once we settled in we were able to show the kind of team we are," Cowley assistant coach Tanner Brock said.
Super sophomore Natalia Lima scored Cowley's first goal of the season as she scored off an assist from Lucia Fernandez with eight minutes left before halftime.
"It means a lot to have someone of Natalia's talent returning to the team," Brock said. "She does what we ask and provides the team with great leadership."
With the score still 1-0, sophomore Carla Ruiz scored off an assist from fellow sophomore Manuela Oliveira midway through the second half. Nine minutes later, Fernandez would score Cowley's third goal off an assist from Lima.
Freshman forward Pauline Goeckeritz capped the scoring by netting the fourth and final goal with just under eight minutes remaining. The goal came off Oliveira's second assist of the game.
"Manuela's knowledge of the game allows her to play any position we ask of her," Brock said.
Sophomore goalkeeper Makayla Farquharson needed to stop only one shot in the 4-0 win.
Cowley will next play at Garden City Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Lady Broncbusters are 3-1 on the season.
"We know being the defending conference champions that we will have a target on our back," Brock said. "We feel the girls are getting used to playing together and work well as a team."
