Achieving its highest-ever national ranking, the No. 9-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team continued its winning ways with a 7-2 victory over Kansas City Kansas Community College Monday in the First-Round of the Midwest District Soccer Playoffs played in Arkansas City.
"We gave up a goal on Kansas City's only chance to score in the first half, but from there on the girls started putting things together," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said.
The victory improves Cowley's record to 14-1-1 overall, while the Lady Blue Devils finish the season with a record of 4-9-1.
After falling behind 1-0, Cowley answered back with goals by four different players in the opening half. Lady Tiger goal scorers were Natalia Lima, Angela Gatto, Marta Aranda, and Gabrielle Oliveria.
The second half saw Lima tack on three more goals as she now has 14 goals on the season and 41 in her career.
"Natalia is relentless, she never quits," Dos Santos said.
Sophomore defender Elsa Pelicant also played well as did Aranda, who added an assist to go along with her third goal of the season.
Cowley will now head to Wichita to face Coffeyville (11-7) Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Stryker Sports Complex. The winner will advance to Saturday's championship game at 6 p.m. with a trip to the national tournament on the line. Coffeyville has gone 4-1 since suffering a 4-1 defeat at Cowley back on October 9.
"They are playing much better than the last time we faced them," Dos Santos said. "We will be prepared and are hoping to make history by advancing to the championship match for the first time."
