You would not have been able to tell it had been nearly 18 months since the No. 15-ranked Cowley College men's soccer team had played a game. Instead, the Tigers appeared to be in mid-season form in a 6-0 win over conference rival Kansas City Kansas Community College Friday in Arkansas City.
"It was a great start," Cowley head coach Ruy Vaz said. "The boys were locked in and it didn't seem like they were nervous for a debut. Six different players scored and we had a clean sheet, so I am proud of them for that."
Sophomore Antonio Peruchi Marra got the scoring started by drilling a penalty kick with 22:42 left in the first half. Cowley would double its lead to 2-0 when Alexandre Picoto headed in a well-executed corner kick by Andre Cavichione with 7:39 left before halftime.
The score would remain 2-0 until sophomore Murilo Ramos scored on a shot from 20 yards out with 33:22 left to play in the game.
Cowley would tack on three more goals in the final seven minutes of play. The Tigers would get goals from freshmen Valentine Iheanyiogu and Adrian Gonzales, as well as a goal from Cavichione as they open the season 1-0.
Shuma Kawabe, a freshman from Tokyo, Japan, recorded a shutout in his first start in goal.
The Tigers will remain home to face Garden City Monday at 6 p.m. at the Tiger Soccer Field. The Broncbusters are 0-1 following a 1-0 loss against Neosho County.
"Now the guys need to flip the switch and focus on a good Garden City squad," Vaz said. "They have talented players and we have to make sure they don't have space and time to play."
