
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2-seed Johnson County baseball team advanced to the next round of the NJCAA Plains District Championship, downing No. 15-seed Garden City 15-3 two sweep the best-of-three series. JCCC opened the series with a comeback 8-7 walk off win Wednesday afternoon.
Jeremy Comer had a big day at the plate for Cavaliers. The sophomore outfielder belted three doubles and drove in five runs. He had a two-run double in the first, drove in one run in the fifth and doubled in the sixth scoring two. His second two-run double was one highlight in the Cavaliers 8-run sixth that ended the game.
Shortstop Chris Mancinas had a double and three driven in. Second baseman Jake McClure had two hits and scored twice. Outfielder Bo Shinkle singled, walked three times and scored three runs. Catcher Miken Miller collected two hits and drove in two and Boston Bruce and East Roe each had an RBI.
Christian Bobzin earned the win for Johnson County. The freshman right-hander allowed three runs of three hits, walked two and struck out five over five innings on the hill. Right-hander Sam Novotny pitched the final one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.
The next stage of the championship will take place at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina, Kan., May 13-17.
