
The Kansas City Kansas Community College baseball team took down Highland Community College four times this past weekend, winning all four games. The first two games were at the KCKCC baseball field with KCKCC winning 18-3 and 9-1. They then took to the road April 26 and beat Highland with scores of 6-2 and 18-4. Currently, KCKCC is in third place in the KJCCC with a conference record of 17-11 behind Cowley 24-4 and Johnson County 23-5.
In the first game at KCKCC, the Blue Devils recorded 16 hits and eight walks on their 18-3 win in the opening game of the series. Spenser Smock tallied a team-high four RBIs from three hits and two runs. Tanner Pachorek led the team off while going 3-4 from the plate while knocking in three RBIs, one walk and one run. Frankie Santiago had the only home run in the opening game while batting 2-5 from the plate. Much of the scoring for KCKCC came in the bottom of the sixth inning where they put up eight runs, extending the lead to 13. The Scotties were unable to score in the top of the 7th inning, so the 10-run mercy rule came into effect.
Bryson Vawter started and threw in the first three innings, allowing two runs (one earned run) from four hits and one walk. He struck out five of the 13 batters that he faced. Carter Beach threw in the fourth inning and didn't allow a single hit. Beach also had one walk and one strikeout. Gavin Killion recorded the save throwing for the final three innings allowing just one run from two Scottie hits.
For the second game, KCKCC was able to get 13 hits in their 9-1 win. Cade Parry was the star for the Blue Devils as he knocked in a team-high three RBIs from two hits. He scored two runs and hit a triple. Ian Woita and Smock had a home run each, adding up three RBIs.
Caleb Deer recorded six strikeouts in his four innings of work while allowing no runs and three hits. Dylan Blazer, Caden Howell and Weston Fries each threw for an inning allowing just one run, one hit and two strikeouts.
For the third game, KCKCC jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the third inning and scored three more runs in the 5th inning extending their lead to 5-0. The Scotties put up two in the bottom of the fifth, and the Blue Devils finished off the games scoring with one run in the top of the 7th inning making it 6-2. Freddie Nolen IV went 2-4 from the plate with two home runs and four RBIs. The other two RBIs came from Marcus Dierks and Pachorek.
Caleb Reed threw for the first five innings allowing two runs (zero earned runs) from three hits and one walk. He also struck out four batters. Killion recorded his second save of the week as he didn't allow a single hit and struck out two Scottie batters in the final two innings of the game.
For the fourth game, the bats were hot for the Blue Devils as they recorded 15 hits in their 18-3 win. Frankie Santiago had an electric game as he had two home runs and a team-high six RBIs. Smock was in the nine-hole and recorded three RBIs from one hit and two walks. Carter Towns went 1-1 with a double and Woita went 3-5 from the plate with two doubles. Parry also had a double and hit in two RBIs with the hit.
Jake Titus started and threw for the opening four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) from five hits. He also walked three and struck out five of the 21 batters he faced. Howell came in and threw two shutout innings while allowing just one hit and no runs with two strikeouts. Blazer finished the game off with one walk and one strikeout with one hit.
The next series for the Blue Devils is against the Cowley County Community College Tigers at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. April 29 at Cowley County in Arkansas City, Kan.
