Box Score 2 After a week full of ice and game postponements, the Highland Community College softball team saw their first game action since opening day as they took on the Ravens of Benedictine College.
Being just their second double-header of the season, the Scotties performed at a high level defeating the Ravens 5-3 and 6-2.
"Today was a great starting point for us. Some was good and some was not so good. Today's games give us an idea of what we need to continue to focus on. We need to keep working and see what this weekend has in store for us before we go into conference play next week," commented Head Softball Coach
Heidi Jordan on the games.
Game 1:
Kelly Uthe got the start in game one and held the Ravens scoreless through the first four innings.
Sydney Anderson started things off in the first inning scoring
Sam Moran with an RBI double to deep center field. Highland tacked on another run in the 3
rd with a
Cassidy Greer RBI double and another run in the 4
th with a
Kendra Baldridge RBI single.
The Ravens scored one run in the 5
th but Highland answered scoring two in the 6
th inning. The Ravens made a late push in the bottom of the 6
th scoring two runs cutting the into the Highland lead 5-3. After a scoreless top of the 7
th,
Haley Donaldson came in the game in the bottom of the inning and recorded the save as Highland went onto win 5-3.
Game 2:
Raegen Hamm started in the circle for the Scotties holding the Ravens scoreless in the first two innings.
Cassidy Greer got on the board first scoring from third base on a passed ball. In the top of the 2
nd,
Sydney Anderson hit a deep ball down the left field line scoring two giving Highland a quick 3-0 lead.
Sara Shinn hit her first collegiate homerun in the top of the 3
rd inning with a smashed ball into the wind over the center field fence extending the Highland lead to 4-0. The Scotties tacked on another in the 3
rd taking a 5-0 lead over the Ravens.
Benedictine answered with two runs in the bottom of the 3
rd but Highland still led 5-2.
As the shade cooled down the field so did the Highland bats as the Ravens held Highland scoreless in the 4
th, 5
th and 6
th innings. As cold as the Highland bats were, so were the Ravens, with both teams struggling to get anything going offensively.
The Scotties tacked on one more insurance run in the top of the seventh as
Kami Zimmerman caught the defense off guard and stole home. Highland took a 6-2 lead heading into the final half inning.
After giving up a leadoff single,
Julisa Ortega finished things off in the seventh and Highland took the sweep with a 6-2 game two final score.
Highland will be back in action this weekend as they will play in the Cloud County Tournament Saturday and Sunday. The Scotties will play at 12:00pm, 2:00pm and 4:00pm on Saturday and 12:00pm and 2:00pm on Sunday.
