Tiger men pick up first-ever win over Cameron; Lady Tigers fall just short in 4-3 loss

Going up against former Tiger tennis player and coach, Josh Cobble, and the NCAA Division II Cameron University tennis teams Tuesday in Lawton, OK, the nationally ranked Cowley College tennis teams split a pair of matches with the Tiger men knocking off Cameron University (4-3) for the first time in school history and the Lady Tigers falling by a score of 5-2.

Cowley head coach Manuel Raga was proud of the Tiger men's performance against the Aggies.

"It was a great win in Cowley history to beat a great team like Cameron University," Raga said. "It came down to the last match and sophomore Javier Gonzalez was able to get the victory for the Tigers in a nail-biting three set match."

Along with Gonzalez, Cowley got wins from its top-two singles players, Jack Clements and Takeshi Taco, while also winning two of three doubles matches.

"I am so happy for these boys because hard work pays off and is showing in our results," Raga said.

The Lady Tigers were not quite as fortunate, but still picked up wins from the No. 3 doubles team of Ane Ibarra and Valentina Rodriguez, as well as Laura Quezada and Ibarra singles.

"The ladies had a close and exciting game, but we did not perform at the level we need to beat Cameron," Raga said.

The Tiger tennis teams will need to be back on top of their game come Friday when they play Tyler Junior College at 9 a.m. in Plano, TX. The Tyler men are 1-0 on the season, while the Lady Apaches are 3-0.
