Barton tennis drops pair at nationally ranked Cowley.
Coming off just a day's rest and making the Tuesday trip to Arkansas City, the Barton Community College tennis program was dealt a pair of defeats from the ranked squads of Cowley College.
The 8th ranked Cougar men, coming off Sunday's securing atleast a share of its first KJCCC title simply 2008, needed fresher legs to keep up with the 2nd ranked Cowley men in falling 7-2, while the shorthanded 13th ranked Barton women dropped all six of their played matches against the nation's 4th ranked Tigers resulting in a 9-0 defeat.
Barton's loss on the men's side spoils the bragging rights of an outright title as the 2-1 Cougars will share the crown with the victor of Friday's Seward County at Cowley match. The Barton women conclude the league season at 0-3.
The three, along with Pratt, will battle for national tournament berths in Pratt next Wednesday competing in the Region 6 Championships.
On the men's side, one of the two victories came from the No. 2 doubles tandem of Victor Alves and Shane Tapera in defeating Cowley's Greco and Garla 8-6. The No. 1 duo of Gabriel Garay and Hayden Loffler were in a tight battle before faltering 7-0 in the tie break to the Tigers' Juwan Bae and Dan Hosono. Cowley would complete its 2-1 advantage into singles play with the No. 3 tandem of Pedro De La Riva and David De Hoyos Rodriguez winning 8-5 over the Cougars' Mohhamed Abuzed and Oliver Naude.
Alves picked up the lone singles play victory in the No. 2 slot as the Cougars' 18th ranked player knocked off the Tigers' 10th ranked De La Riva 6-4, 6-2
Barton lost two matches in the tiebreak after winning the first set, the first coming in the top singles matchup as 14th ranked Garay took the 1-0 lead, winning the first set 6-2 before falling 7-5 in the second and 6-3 in the third to the Tigers' Garla.
A similar result came in the No. 3 slot, Abuzed taking the first 6-3 but the Tigers' 21st ranked Greco prevailed in the second set tiebreaker 7-1 before rolling in the decisive breaker 10-3.
