The No. 12-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team avenged its only loss of the season by knocking off 18th-ranked Barton Community College 3-1 Saturday in Arkansas City.
Cowley, winners of seven games in a row, finishes the regular season with a record of 13-1-1 overall and 12-1 in the Jayhawk Conference Western Division.
"I am so proud of this group," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "We have a bunch of ladies that have been here for three conference titles and have left a legacy for the new players. We fed off our home crowd, the atmosphere was great."
On Saturday, Cowley got the scoring started early as a foul outside the box set up a Manuela Oliveira free kick. The shot was initially deflected by goalkeeper Nia Baker but Lucia Fernandez was there to get the ball and blast a shot past Baker for the early lead.
Cowley's lead would grow to 2-0 when Gabrielle Oliveira scored with 11:26 left before halftime.
The Cougars answered back less than a minute later as Annika Gerdau got beyond a Tiger defender and sent a shot past Cowley keeper Makayla Farquharson slicing the deficit in half. For Gerdau it was her team leading 11th goal of the season.
Natalia Lima would put the Tigers up by two midway through the second half, using her speed to slip behind the defense to strike upper near post beyond Baker's reach with 26:21 left. The goal by Lima was her team-leading 10th of the season.
Cowley would hold onto the lead as they handed Barton just its third defeat of the season.
"We controlled the game and were never really threatened," Dos Santos said. "We let our guard down for a minute, but did a good job of responding."
Barton (12-3-1) finished second in the Jayhawk West with a record of 9-3-1.
Cowley will now prepare to host the First-Round of the Region VI Playoffs. The Lady Tigers will face Kansas City (4-8-1) Monday at 5 p.m. The Lady Tigers won 3-0 at Kansas City back on September 4.
"Last year, Butler upset us when we were the No. 1-seed in the region tournament," Dos Santos said. "This group of sophomores knows how traumatic that loss was and do not want to experience that again."
