Lady Conqs Use Strong Second Half to Beat Sterling in Season Opener

When the Lady Conquistadors headed into halftime, they took a one-point deficit with them. However, when they came out of the locker room, they flipped a switch.

In a game that surprisingly featured 11 lead changes, Coach Zach Loll's squad used a 13-8 advantage in the third quarter to take the game's final lead change. The knockout punch came with a 19-10 fourth quarter that featured a 9-0 run and the Lady Conqs' largest lead of 16 points.

"We got our first game jitters out of the way and played better the second half," said head coach Zach Loll.

The bench came alive for the Lady Conquistadors in the second half to the tune of a 13-2 scoring advantage over the Warriors' bench. This added to a 21-10 overall advantage for the game.

Two freshmen in Aakiyah Sorrells (10 points, three rebounds) and Ane Garcia de Vicuna (six points, four rebounds, one block) were the driving forces behind the strong bench play.

The Conquistadors were paced in scoring by sophomore Emery Maze's 11 points to go with her five rebounds and two assists. Maze was responsible for three triples that all seemed to have come at the right time, including one early in the third quarter that helped kick start the Lady Conqs' second half.

Freshman Keimora Banks also scored 10 points for the Lady Conqs. Sophomore Madison Gissendanner was efficient with her looks scoring eight points on four shots to go with her five rebounds.

The Sterling Warriors attack was spearheaded by Ivory Muldrow's double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds. Cheyan Britain also chipped in 11 points as the duo kept the Warriors in the mix for most of the game.

"You're always happy with a win, but we have some things to work on before we go to Neosho Wednesday. Our team needs to have a sense of urgency," Coach Loll concluded.

The Lady Conquistadors are back in action Wednesday, January 27th as they open up league play in Chanute against Neosho County Community College at 5:30 pm. The game can be found on the Neosho Athletics Youtube page at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCChB0NobbXkzps2oiVSxtUA.
