
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – No. 8-ranked Johnson County baseball team is the hottest team in the Kansas Jayhawk Conference East Division as they extended their winning streak to 15 straight defeating Coffeyville 6-1 and 9-6 at the JCCC Baseball Complex Wednesday afternoon.
The two victories also kept the Cavaliers in contention with Cowley for the conference title with six games remaining.
In the opener, the Ravens took a short-lived 1-0 lead off a sacrifice fly, but a two-run homer by JCCC outfielder Jeremy Comer in the bottom half of the inning gave the Cavaliers a lead they would not relinquish. Comer later ripped a double and scored.
Third baseman Carter Kelley provided a solo homer over left field in the fifth and in the sixth first baseman Easton Roe singled home two runs and outfielder Ryker Edwards had a sacrifice fly RBI to close out the scoring
Josiah Golden started on the hill. The sophomore right-hander gave up four hits and one run over five and two-thirds innings, striking out seven. Right-hander Keston Holmen threw the final one and one-third innings, surrendering only one hit to pick up his league-leading seventh save on the season. His seven saves tie him for the fifth on JCCC's season chart.
Like the first game, Coffeyville jump out to the early 1-0 lead only to have Comer again provided an offensive spark in the Cavaliers half of the innings. He singled to center field driving in Bo Shinkle to tie the game at 1-1.
The Cavaliers broke the tie in the bottom of the second plating three runs. Shinkle singled, scoring two runs and DH Miken Miller drove in his first of two runs on the game with a sacrifice fly.
Shortstop Chris Mancinas drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt in the third and catcher Boston Bruce hit into a fielder's choice to drive in a run in the fourth to put JCCC back on top 6-5 after the Ravens scored four in the top of the fourth.
Three more runs crossed the plate for the Cavaliers in the fifth to extend the lead to 9-5. Outfielder Ryker Edwards hit a solo home run to left field, a wild pitch scored a run and Miller tripled, scoring a run.
Luke Fricker took the hill for starter Sam Novotny in the fifth inning. The freshman right-hander threw two and one-third innings of no-run ball in relief to pick up the second win the of the season. Freshman right-hander Hudson Byrd logged the final two innings, allowing one run off two hits with four strikeouts to earn his second save.
Johnson County (40-10/22-4) will close out the series at Coffeyville (30-16/18-12) Saturday, April 26. The Cavaliers close out the regular season against Fort Scott (33-17/13-13) next week with the first two games hosted by the Greyhounds on Wednesday, April 30, followed by two games at JCCC on Thursday, May 1.
