JCCC softball splits with KCKC

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College softball team picked another split series on Thursday against Kansas City Kansas Community College, winning 9-1 in the second game after dropping the opener 10-8.

The Cavaliers belted five home runs, two from second baseman Jaylee Jefferson, to post the 9-1 victory. Jefferson hit a solo shot over center field in the fifth and blasted a two-run shot in the sixth inning.

First baseman Aspen Burgardt, the reigning NJCAA D-II Player of the Year, hit a two-run homer and shortstop Izzy Carter and third baseman Reagan Neitzel hit solo shots.

Right-hander Jalin Lavers earned a complete-game victory, allowing just one run off five hits while striking out seven over six innings

In the 10-8 opening loss, the Cavaliers also hit five home runs, but it wasn't enough to over the Blue Devils.

Neitzel belted two over the fence to drive in three runs. Jefferson hit a two-run shot in the third, and Burgardt and catcher Maddie Murray hit solo homers. Carter also collected two hits, including a double, and drove in a run.

Johnson County travels to Fort Scott on Saturday, April 12 or a conference double header.
