Hosting the First-Round of the District Playoffs, the No. 3-ranked Cowley College men's soccer team was 23 minutes away from suffering its first defeat of the season before the Tigers came alive and rallied to knock off Johnson County 3-2 Monday in Arkansas City.
The Tigers got a goal from Caique Trivelato, his team-leading 15th of the season, to lead 1-0 at the end of the first half. However, Johnson County would tie the game at 1-1 on an unassisted goal by Troy Henry 10 minutes into the second half.
Then, with just over 23 minutes remaining, freshman Sean Brooks scored to give the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead.
"At that point in the game we were frustrated, but we had no panic," Cowley head coach Ruy Vaz said. "We remained persistent and continued to play our game."
Eight minutes later, the Tigers' Gabriel Verona scored off a beautiful assist from Mateo Jimenez to tie the game at 2-2.
With the game looking likely to head to overtime, Masaya Sekiguchi sent a corner kick into the box where Pedro Arcoverde headed in the game-winning goal with 1:54 left to play.
"Johnson County is a tough match up and played well, but we deserved to move forward," Vaz said. "I wish we could have been able to take care of business earlier, but our team performs really well under pressure."
The Cavaliers finish the season with a record of 7-10, with eight of the 10 losses coming by a lone goal.
Tiger goalkeeper Rafael Furlani stopped five of the seven shots he faced and Cowley had twice as many shots on goal than the Cavaliers.
Cowley improves its record to 15-0 and will now prepare to face Kansas City (5-5-2) Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita. The Tigers defeated Kansas City 4-0 back on September 4, but the Blue Devils are riding high following a double overtime victory over Barton on Monday.
"Kansas City is a scrappy team that has some good players up top," Vaz said. "We need to make sure to be prepared to keep playing our game, possess the ball, and pull off another win."
