Lady Tigers topple Colby 64-52

Getting double-doubles from sophomores Baylee Fincher and Martyna Kowalska, the Cowley College women's basketball team picked up a 64-52 win at Colby Community College on Monday.

The victory keeps Cowley (16-10) in a fifth place tie with Barton in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 12-9. Colby is now 8-17 overall and 5-14 in the conference.

"It was big for us to find a way to win," Cowley head coach Todd Clark said. "I was pleased with the way we battled through some adversity."

Kowalska was a force in the paint, finishing with 13 points, 19 rebounds, five blocked shots and four assists. Fincher also played well as she led all scorers with 19 points, while adding 11 rebounds.

"Those two were aggressive and gave us some big contributions," Clark said.

On Monday, Cowley trailed 17-14 at the end of the first quarter . However, the Lady Tigers used a 10-2 run to open the second quarter and led 35-24 at the end of the first half.

Cowley's lead would grow to as many as 14 points early in the third quarter before Colby began to chip away at the deficit. The Trojans pulled within 52-49 following a jumper by Oluwabukol Akinsola with 6:37 left to play.

A three-pointer by Fincher pushed the Lady Tigers' lead back to six points and Cowley never looked back as they finished the game on a 12-3 run.

Cowley out-shot Colby 42.4 percent to 31.4 percent from the floor. De'jah Vigilante led the Lady Trojans with 14 points in the loss.

Cowley will return home to play Butler Community College Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the team's homecoming game.

"It will be a big game in a quick turn-around, so we will need to find the energy to be ready to go," Clark said.
