DODGE CITY, Kan. – 16th ranked Butler softball hit the road for a Jayhawk Conference doubleheader vs. Dodge City at Legends Park on Saturday, picking up two crucial conference wins.
Butler (34-6, 23-5) earned a scrappy win in game one, 10-8, before pounding out 17 hits in a 20-1 win over the Conquistadors (24-22, 16-12) in game two. After a split in El Dorado on March 20th that saw Dodge City snap a 48-game Butler win streak in the series in game two, Butler handled business on the road.
Seven combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings helped the Grizzlies squeak by in game one. Dodge City tied the game 3-3 in the third inning, but Butler later took a 10-4 lead in the sixth. Dodge City used two runs each in the sixth and seventh to get within two. Chloe Odle (W, 12-3) got the start for Butler and threw 5.0 innings allowing four runs as she struck out seven and walked three. Addy Ewing tossed the final 2.0 allowing four runs on four hits walking one. Five Grizzlies had multi-hit performances in the game with Graci Hock driving in four runs on a grand slam.
Game one went the way of the Grizzlies in a hurry. They plated eight runs in the first inning and five each in the second and third to cruise to a 20-1 win. It marked the second game of the season that Butler scored 20 or more runs with the other being a 22-3 win over Garden City at East Park on April 16th. Nine Grizzlies recorded a hit with Claire Lopez and Hock each having four hits. Kyler Demel drove in a game-high five runs. Ellie Randall (W, 12-1) threw all 5.0 innings for the Grizzlies allowing the lone run on five hits, striking out four and walking one.
