Grizzlies Bested by Coffeyville in Game 1
Butler's Offense Struggles in Game One
COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – Butler baseball fell 9-1 to Coffeyville at Walter Johnson Park on Wednesday afternoon in the first game of the Plains District Tournament best-of-three series.
Butler (25-27) was outhit 14-5 by the Red Ravens (33-18) as Coffeyville plated multiple runs in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
The Grizzlies got the scoring started in the first inning as sophomore catcher Breck Romero singled in Cooper Rasmussen to give Butler a 1-0 lead. It turned out to be Butler's only run of the game.
Coffeyville answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first on an RBI single making it 1-1.
Both teams were scoreless over the next three innings but the Red Ravens broke through with three runs in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Butler starter Shane Holman (L, 7-3) went 5.0 innings allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out two and walking none.
Coffeyville starter Cross Dowd punched out 11 in 7.0 innings of work, walking two and allowing the lone run on four hits. Zane Wilson threw the final 2.0 allowing a lone hit.
Butler turned to Connor Clark and Bradyn McClure out of the pen with Clark allowing one earned run in the sixth and McClure allowing three runs on three hits, striking out two, in the eighth and ninth. The Grizzly pitching staff hit six Red Ravens.
The Grizzly offense had five innings going 1-2-3 being sat down in order. They struck out 11 times compared to just two walks.
Coffeyville was led by designated hitter Shawn Bareno who was 3-5 with a game-high four runs driven in.
Coffeyville leads the best-of-three series 1-0. Butler needs a win on Thursday at 3 p.m. to keep the season alive.
