National Tournament hopes crushed after 67-74 loss

Box Score After defeating Johnson County twice during the regular season, Highland was unable to get win number three and fell to the No. 2 seeded Cavaliers 67-74 Wednesday afternoon in Hartman Arena.
 
A slow start in the first half would force the Scotties to play catch up the rest of the afternoon. Johnson County jumped out to a quick nine-point lead just seven minutes into the game. A Jaquan Daniels steal and slam dunk would ignite a spark for Highland with eight minutes to play in the first half. Back to back three pointers by Danmons O'Connor and Stephon Jackson would give Highland their first lead since the 18:44 mark, HCC led 22-21 with 7:24 to play in the half.
 
Johnson would hit (2) three pointers in the final two minutes of the half giving them a seven point, 38-31 lead over Highland heading into the break.
 
The Cavaliers extended their lead to 12 points after an Anthony Lupardus three-pointer, their largest lead of the night, with 9:19 to play in the game. Highland put together an 11-0 run the next five and a half minutes cutting the Johnson lead to just one with 3:25 to play in the game.
 
Johnson would go onto hit nine free throws and hold the Scotties to just five points in the final three minutes of the game. The Cavaliers would go onto win the game 74-67, advancing them to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.
 
Dontre English led Highland in scoring with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists. Stephon Jackson was the only other Scottie in double figures with 17 points. Andre Jackson finished with six points four rebounds, Jaquan Daniels and Danmons O'Connor also finished with six each and Ryan Haskins five points, five boards.
 
Highland finished the year 24-8, the winningest season since 1983, and won the KJCCC Division II Conference Championship for the first time in school history. Congratulations to the men's basketball team on a great season.
