BJ Smith, in just his 6
th year at HCC, has become the winningest coach in Highland women's basketball history with win number 150. He surpassed long time coach Marty Allen for most wins with a victory over University of Saint Mary JV on Monday night.
After a slow first half, the Scotties found their rhythm and defeated University of Saint Mary JV 90-55 on Monday night.
Being their third game in four days, the Lady Scotties continued to show why they are the Division II, #2 ranked team in the nation.
Jameka Dowell and
Mariane Carvalho got it going offensively for the Scotties in the first half scoring seven points each but it was their full court defense that stretched their first half lead.
Highland forced the Spires into 22 turnovers in the first half helping them to a 36-22 halftime lead.
Highland found their offense in the 3
rd and 4
th quarters scoring 25 and 29 points never giving the Spires a chance to get back in the game.
Again, it was the defensive pressure from the Scotties that controlled this game. Highland forced another 24 turnovers in the 2
nd half for a total of 46 on the night. They scored 48 of their 90 points off of Saint Mary turnovers.
The Scotties were led in scoring by sophomore guard
Jameka Dowell with 16 points, two assists and two steals.
Mariane Carvalho chipped in with 13 points and seven steals.
Szonja Vukov and
Tiana Cook were the other two Scotties in double digits at 11 and 10. Vukov pulled down seven boards while Cook dished out five assists.
Highland improves to 9-0 on the year and will play on Monday, November 28
th at home against Washburn University JV at 7:00pm.
