Getting goals from a pair of unlikely sources, the No. 17-ranked Cowley College women's soccer team defeated Johnson County 2-0 Monday in Overland Park, KS. The victory moves Cowley (8-1-1) into a first place tie with Barton Community College in the Jayhawk Conference West Division as both teams are 7-1 in conference play.
Monday's game was scoreless for the majority of the first half before Cowley scored both of its goals in a span of four minutes. Freshman Nanako Seki scored the game's first goal off an assist from Pauline Goeckeritz with 8:38 left in the opening half. Four minutes later, freshman Gabrielle Oliveria scored off an assist from Natalia Lima to give Cowley some breathing room.
The goals for Seki and Oliveria were the second of the season for both players.
"They both stepped up and played really well," Cowley head coach Roberto dos Santos said. "We had talked about needing to have everyone step up their level of intensity and we did that. It was a good win against a good team."
Makayla Farquharson stopped both shots she faced as Cowley notched its seventh shutout of the season.
The loss drops Johnson County's record to 4-5 overall and 3-5 in the Jayhawk East.
Cowley will attempt to remain unbeaten at home when they take on Garden City Wednesday at 4 p.m. on the new turf that was recently installed at its soccer complex. Garden City is 5-8 overall and 2-7 in the Jayhawk West.
"We are excited to play on our home field," Dos Santos said. "Every game in the conference is a challenge, so we will go into the game not overlooking Garden City."
