Cavaliers claim third straight conference title

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Thanks to a little help from their cross-town rival, the No. 6-ranked Johnson County Community College baseball team earned its third consecutive Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference East Division championship.

On Friday afternoon, the Cavaliers completed a four-game sweep over Fort Scott, winning 6-1 and 18-4, placing JCCC one game back of Cowley and who was traveling to take on Kansas City Kansas on Saturday. The Blue Devils swept the doubleheader with the Tigers, which moved Johnson County (27-5) ahead of Cowley  (26-6) in the standings to claim the title.

In the opener with the Greyhounds, Johnson County third baseman Carter Kelley belted a pair of home runs to drive in three runs, and outfielder Jeremy Comer drove in two to pace JCCC offense.

Chrisitan Bobzin earned the complete-game victory. The freshman right-hander allowed one run off three hits, walked two and struck out five over seven innings. With the win Bobzin improved to 5-0 on the season. It was his first complete game pitched this year.

In the second game, the Cavaliers plated run in seven of the nine innings to win easily, 18-4.

Kelley and Comer again was had the hot bats for the Cavaliers. Kelley again belted two homers and drove in four runs. He also had a single, a walk and scored three runs. Comer was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI.

Catcher Boston Bruce collected two singles and double drive in three runs and Ryker Edwards and Briggs Roe also drove in multiple runs.

Denton Biller was the winning pitcher allowing one hit, zero runs with a strikeout in an inning of work.  Hudson Byrd, Ronin Vincenti, Ashton Hartwig and Jackson Downing also saw action on the bump.
