Getting two more goals from freshman Valentine Iheanyiogu, the No. 13-ranked Cowley College men's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 3-0 win at Dodge City on Wednesday.
The victory improves Cowley's record to 3-0, while Dodge City begins the year 0-1.
On Wednesday, Cowley got a goal from Iheanyiogu to go in front 1-0 with eight minutes left in the first half. The score would remain 1-0 until Iheanyiogu scored again off the second assist of the game from Luis Rodrigues with 25 minutes left to play. The goal was the team-leading fifth of the season for Iheanyiogu.
Cowley's final goal came 10 minutes later when Ryoma Sakamoto scored unassisted.
Tiger goalkeeper Shuma Kawabe recorded his second shutout of the season and did not have to make a save in the win.
"It was a very good performance overall," Cowley head coach Ruy Vaz said. "We had control of the game for 90 minutes. We never felt as if Dodge City could threaten us even when we played against the wind. It seems to me that we are starting to understand our own potential and our execution is getting better."
Cowley will now prepare to host No. 15-ranked Johnson County Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Arkansas City High School soccer field.
"There are several things we still need to fix but all things considered we are headed in the right direction," Vaz said. "On Sunday we will face a renewed Johnson County and we expect a big battle."
