The volleyball team had a quick turn around after a win on Wednesday evening over Independence CC to play in a triangular in Fort Dodge, IA at Iowa Central CC. The Scotties were listed to play Iowa Central and Grand View University JV.
The three set match did not come easy after seeing long rally after another throughout. Highland stuck together to come out on top playing a very solid match. The match against Grandview University JV was cancelled.
Highland started the first set with high energy and played ahead. After a block by
Emma Cohalla and
Koie Orozco on the Tritans powerful outside at 21-16 and an ace to follow by Cohalla it looked as though the Scotties would pull ahead. Iowa Central came back on a three point run causing a timeout by Highland at 23-20. Highland go the job done to win 25-21.
The teams were tied early in the 2
nd 7-7. Back-to-back kills by
Leslie Polanco and
Katie Pearson put Highland back up 9-8 which started a three point run at 12-9. The Tritans would come back to lead 16-14 but Highland kept up the fight coming back to lead 17-16 with a timeout called by Iowa Central. After a back row attack by Polanco and an ace by Orozco seeing 19-17 the Tritans worked to defend their court coming back to lead 21-19. With the game tied at 23-23 another long rally resulted in a big block by Cohalla and Pearson helped the Scotties to win 28-26.
The third set started the same early being tied up 7-7 from a back row attack by Polanco off
Kirsten Johnson and an ace by Orozco. Highland took a lead at 14-12 with a timeout for the Tritans. A solo block occurred by Polanco out of the timeout 15-12 and the Scotties took full control the rest of the game. Two kills in a row by Orozco and an ace by Cohalla finished the match 25-15.
Johnson stood out on defense for the Scotties picking up 20 digs followed by Polanco with 12. Pearson, Kleitz, and Prine each contributed 9, 8, and 7 digs as well. Cohalla had an outstanding four solo blocks, two block assists, and two aces. The team had nine service aces on the three set match. Polanco led kills with 10 and Pearson dished out 20 set assists.
The Highland volleyball team will travel to Iola, KS to take on Allen Community College (0-16) on Wednesday, September 20
th at 6:30.
