GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The Seward County Community College baseball team suffered a pair of gut-wrenching, extra-inning losses at Garden City Community College on Saturday, 2-1 and 9-8, and a split the four-game series. Seward opened the series with a doubleheader sweep at home Thursday.
The Saints are sixth in the Jayhawk West at 8-16 and 21-26 overall. Seward opens a crucial series at Pratt on Thursday. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
GAME ONE
Seward could not hold to a late lead and suffered a 2-1 extra-inning loss to Garden City in game one.
Both teams were held scoreless until the Saints struck in the top of the sixth inning when Nathan Hopkins led off with a double and moved to third on Kotaro Wakui's fly out. Brooks Barber followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Hopkins to give Seward a 1-0 lead.
It looked like the lead would hold, but Garden City tied it with a run in the seventh inning and won it in the eighth in extra innings.
Ashton Creighton, who was one out away from securing the win, was impressive, allowing just one run on seven hits, struck out three and walked two over 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision.
GAME ONE
Seward opened a big advantage against Garden City only to see it evaporate and take another extra inning loss, 9-8, in eight innings in the nightcap.
The Saints trailed 2-0 after the Broncbusters scored twice in the top of the first inning, but rebounded for six runs in the fifth to grab a 6-2 lead with the big blow being Grant Cox's three-run double. Brooks Barber also had a two-run double and Blaine Chancy added an RBI single in the inning for Seward.
Seward added to its lead in the sixth with two runs coming with a Nathan Hopkins RBI single and a Hayden Ramage bases-loaded walk. The Saints had a chance to pad their lead in the inning with the bases loaded and only one out, but came up empty.
That missed golden opportunity would prove costly as the wheels fell off for the Saints bullpen, allowing six runs in the sixth inning to tie the game and a winning run in the eighth.
