
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College softball team celebrated its sophomores on Thursday, May 1 with a doubleheader sweep over Hesston in the final series of the regular season. The Cavaliers opened with a 9-1 five-inning run-rule victory and followed with another five-inning run-rule win at 10-2. JCCC finishes the regular season 30-15 overall and 17-5 in Kansas Jayhawk Conference Division II play.
In the opener, Johnson County out hit the Larks 14-to-2 with six extra base hits. Catcher Maddie Murray had two of those six hits collecting a double and a home run. She finished 3-for-3 overall and drove in four runs.
Freshman first baseman Jayla Green got her first hit and RBI of the season. She finished the game 3-for-3 with a double. Sophomore outfielder Haley Bryant ripped three hits including a double and sophomore second baseman Jaylee Jefferson belted a two-run shot. Sophomore shortstop Izzy Carter and freshman Reagan Nietzel each had two hits and an RBI.
Sophomore Brielle Dee was solid in the circle. The right-hander allowed just one run on two hits and struck out four to up her season mark to 9-5.
In the second game, Murray, Carter and Green were again the key producers for the Cavaliers. Murray was 3-for-3 with two driven in. Carter had a two-run double, and Green ripped two doubles and drove in two runs.
Neitzel, Bryant, freshman outfielder Makenzie Yoder and sophomore infielder Aspen Burgardt each had one RBI. Burgardts RBI upped her career total to 124, setting a new record at Johnson County.
Sophomore right-hander Jalin Lavers improved to 13-5 on the season. She allowed two runs of four hits with four strikeouts over five innings in the circle.
Johnson County will open the 2025 postseason on Tuesday, May 6 against Fort Scott at the JCCC softball complex. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
