The No. 13-ranked Cowley College men's soccer team, the top-seeded team out of the Jayhawk East, bounced back from its first two losses of the season by defeating Jayhawk West No. 4-seed Johnson County 5-0 Wednesday at Jantz Stadium in Winfield, KS. With the win, the Tigers advance to play at the NJCAA Plains District Soccer Tournament May 22-23 at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, KS.
Cowley (10-2) scored four goals in the first half and cruised to its sixth shutout victory of the season.
"We executed well in terms of strategy and when the going got tough we were able to make things happen," Cowley head coach Ruy Vaz said.
The Tigers got a pair of first half goals from Tsubasa Nakamori, while Ryoma Sakamoto and Murilo Ramos also scored as Cowley went into halftime with a commanding 4-0 lead.
Cowley's Adrian Gonzales would cap the scoring by netting his fourth goal of the season in the second half.
Johnson County finishes its season with a record of 2-10.
Cowley will face Dodge City Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, KS. After a rough start to the season, Dodge City (4-5-2) has won three games in a row. However, the Tigers have already beaten the Conquistadors twice this season.
"Dodge City plays a very similar style to us and is well coached," Vaz said. "We are at the point in the season where if you lose, you are out. We just need to execute what we do in practice and then see what happens."
The winner of the NJCAA Plains District Tournament will move on to play at the NJCAA Soccer Championships June 5-10 in Wichita, KS.
