Broncbusters rally past Colby in opener
Garden City, KS-One swing of the bat changed everything.
Reagan Sword's towering three-run homer in the sixth capped a wild finish as Garden City topped Colby, 10-7 in Wednesday's opener at Tangeman Sports Complex.
Yina Ballesta Vargas notched her 10th win of the season in the circle, fanning seven over seven innings. She surrendered seven runs on 10 hits and walked three.
The Broncbusters were cruising along after a five-run first, which included Chiara Olison's 10th homer of the season.
But the Trojans, which trailed 6-1 entering the fifth, came roaring back. Paige Pierce blasted a grand slam over the fence in right-center to make it a one-run game. Then in the sixth, Tess Polad tripled home the tying run before Bailey Jackson's RBI base hit gave Colby a 7-6 advantage.
Garden City though answered in their half of the sixth. Kenzie Garza smacked a leadoff solo shot, and Sword sent the crowd into a frenzy with a two-out, three-run blast to make it 10-7.
Garza finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Broncbusters, which improved to 16-13 overall and 7-7 in conference.
