Grizzlies Sweep Barton on Sophomore Day, Take Hold of 2nd Place
Butler Recognizes 15 Sophomores, Sweeps Cougars
EL DORADO, Kan. – Entering the afternoon a game behind the Barton Cougars in the KJCCC standings, the 16th ranked Butler Grizzlies exited the day a game ahead in sole possession of second place following a sweep of the Cougars at East Park.
Butler (36-6, 25-5) won 10-4 in game one and 11-2 in game two to sweep the Cougars (31-13, 24-6) on the Grizzlies sophomore day that saw 15 sophomores honored in a postgame ceremony on the field.After splitting a doubleheader earlier this season in Great Bend the Grizzlies rebounded for a sweep on Tuesday to win the series 3-1 in the regular season.
The Grizzlies now sit alone in second place, a game behind the Hutchinson Blue Dragons. The regular season is set to wrap up on Saturday with the regular season conference champion and Region 6 Tournament seeding to be announced shortly after.
Game one saw Butler starting pitcher Chloe Odle chased from the game without recording an out as Barton started the game with a leadoff home run and a single. Emillee Stofferahn was inserted for Odle, making her first appearance since April 13th in a win at Fort Hays Tech Northwest. Stofferahn and the Grizzlies settled in, holding Barton to just one run in the inning. Butler took a 3-0 lead in the second inning as a Cougar error and RBI doubles from Kyler Demel and Claire Lopez sent runners home. Barton pulled within 3-2 in the third but six Grizzly runs on the fourth made it a 9-2 game. Stofferahn (W, 4-0) tossed 4.0 innings in relief allowing three runs on six hits. Addy Ewing earned her fourth save of the season throwing the final 3.0 innings allowing no runs on two hits. A grand slam from Kim Yepez in the fourth inning made it an 8-2 Grizzly lead before Jenna Jobe followed it up with a solo shot of her own to make it back-to-back blasts. Alivia Darbe got a pinch hit opportunity in the bottom of the sixth and sent the first pitch she saw over the left center field wall for a solo home run. Barton's Meleia Ingram (L, 16-5) suffered the loss allowing nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits.
Barton struck first in game two with a run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly. Butler answered with three runs in the third as Kyrsten Moran singled in two runs and Kim Yepez singled in another. The Grizzlies then exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning sending 13 batters to the plate tallying eight hits. The inning gave them an 11-1 lead. Barton added a run in the fifth but Ellie Randall (W, 13-1) proceeded to get out of the inning as the Grizzlies got the run rule win. Randall allowed just two runs on five hits with a strikeout and two walks in her five innings of work, her fifth complete game of the season.
