EL DORADO, Kan. – Playing as the visiting team while at their home venue, Butler baseball secured two wins over the Seward Saints, 7-4 and 12-0, at McDonald Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With rainy weather in Liberal shifting the entire series to El Dorado for a Sunday/Monday series, Butler (19-14, 11-7) served as the visiting team for the first two games of the four-game series with the Saints (15-22, 2-12) being the home team.
Butler took two from Seward at McDonald Stadium for the first time since the 2018 season as they moved to 11-7 in league play.
The Grizzlies had to rally in game one as they faced a 4-2 deficit after three innings of play. Both teams were scoreless from the fourth through the sixth innings but a four spot for the Grizzlies in the top of the seventh gave them a 7-4 lead that closer Jack Haag was able to hold onto for his KJCCC West leading sixth save of the season. The four run seventh inning saw Jaden Rose deliver an RBI double, Rose score on a Saint error and Alex Coester plate two on a single to left center field. Shane Holman (W, 6-0) picked up the win tossing 6.0 innings allowing four runs on 10 hits, striking out six and walking one. The walk was just Holman's second of the season. All four runs from Seward came in the first three innings. Koshiro Ohno (L, 1-2) threw the final 1.2 innings for Seward allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits. Starter Braden Whipple threw 5.1 innings allowing two earned runs, walking five and striking out three.
Game two was all Grizzlies as they began the game with four first inning runs and closed it out with six seventh inning runs. They got the run rule win to complete it in seven innings. Whitley Rhodes (W, 2-1) got the start and tossed a complete game shutout striking out six as Butler used 12 runs on 13 hits to secure the sweep.
