Late Heroics Boost Blue Devils to Sweep

The Kansas City Kansas Community College baseball team swept the Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds at the KCKCC baseball field with scores of 4-0 and 7-5 April 10. Both teams entered Thursday afternoon with a conference record of 7-9. With both wins, KCKCC is now in fourth place behind Cowley (18-4), Johnson County (18-4) and Coffeyville (13-9).

In the first gameCade Parry went 1-3 at the plate and brought in one runner. Both Spenser Smock and Ian Woita had an RBI and combined for one run. Marcus Dierks led the Blue Devils and recorded one hit and one RBI. Sawyer Tolk and Frankie Santiago both had hits and Santiago hit his fourth triple of the season.

Bryson Vawter threw for the first five innings and allowed no runs, five hits and three walks. He struck out nine of the 22 batters that he faced. Gavin Killion threw for the final two innings and allowed just two hits with no runs and two strikeouts.

For the second game, KCKCC entered the bottom of the eighth inning trailing the Greyhounds with a score of 5-3. Sawyer Tolk led the eighth inning off with a walk, and then Santiago walked in just four pitchers. With the tying run on first base, Freddie Nolen IV stepped up to the plate with no outs. After a Greyhound mound visit, Nolen IV took one pitch for a strike to make the count 0-1. On the second high and outside pitch, Nolen IV swung and got every bit of the ball to send it over the right field wall to retake the lead, 6-5. KCKCC wasn't done just yet as Braden Horn hit a double to left field with no outs to keep the bats rolling. Holden Finley pinch ran for Horn and would eventually score off of a sac-fly to right field from Colton Kirkham to finish off the Blue Devil scoring.

There were three pitchers for KCKCC as Caleb Deer threw for the first six innings allowing just two runs from five hits. He struck out six and walked three of the 27 batters he faced. Dylan Blazer entered game in the seventh inning and allowed three runs from five hits in his 1.2 innings of work. Caden Howell recorded the win as he threw for the final 1.1 innings without allowing a single hit and one strikeout.

The next series for the Blue Devils is against the Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. April 12 at the Fort Scott baseball field.
