Saints split with Colby in run-rule contests, win series

LIBERAL, Kan. – It was a tale of two games for the Seward County Community College baseball team, losing the opener, 12-2, and winning the cap nightcap, 27-7, in a split of a wild doubleheader at Brent Gould Field on Saturday. The Saints took three of four games from the Trojans and posted their first series win in the Jayhawk West.

Seward is 6-4 in conference play and 19-24 overall. Seward's next series is against Garden City with the opening two games at Brent Gould Field on Thursday. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. with free admission.

GAME ONE

The Seward offense was mostly silent while Colby found its stroke and the Saints fell 12-2 in a five-inning, rule-rule loss in game one.

Colby jumped out early and often against the Saints, scoring two runs in the second inning, four runs in the third and three runs each in the fourth and fifth to cruise to the easy win.

Seward's lone offense came in the third inning with two runs on a Kotaro Wakui RBI single and a Brooks Barber run-scoring groundout. The Saints could only muster seven singles in the game.

Logan Tice took the loss, giving up six runs, five earned, on six hits over 2 1/3 innings.

GAME TWO

The Seward bats awakened in a big way and returned the favor to Colby with a 27-7 seven-inning, run-rule win in the nightcap.

The game started out the same as the opener with Colby scoring first with three runs in the first inning to take the early lead. After that, the similarities were over and the Saints pulled out the whooping sticks, answering back with eight runs in the first, six runs second and four runs in third. Seward added nine more runs over the final two innings to cap the scoring.

Nathan Hopkins went 4-for-4 with eight RBI, Ryan Todd and Hayden Ramage each drove in five runs and Grant Cox added three hits and four RBI for the Saints, who also blasted five six homers. Hopkins hit two homers, Todd had a grand slam and Ramage, Cox and Jacob Urias completed the home run derby.

Kashiro Ohno gave up an unearned run on three hits, struck out two and walked three over 2 2/3 innings in relief for the Saints. In his first start of the season for Seward, Ashton Creighton allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits, struck out four and walked three over 4 1/3 innings.
