Facing arch-rival Johnson County Sunday in Arkansas City, the No. 13-ranked Cowley College men's soccer team shutout the Cavaliers 3-0 to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Sunday's game was scoreless at the end of the first half.
"We were lacking a bit of intensity, but we had a good halftime talk," Cowley head coach Ruy Vaz said.
The Tigers came out aggressive in the second half and netted three goals in a 13-minute span.
"The guys were a little more focused in the second half and understood they had to put the ball away," Vaz said. "Johnson County made some youthful mistakes that we were able to capitalize off of."
Cowley got goals from Ryoma Sakamoto, Adrian Gonzales, and Andre Cavichione. Appearing in his first game this season, Tsubasa Nakamori added two assists.
"Tsubasa is a very talented player, but this shows the depth of our team that this was the first game he has played in," Vaz said. "Our midfielders, including Antonio Marra, Masaya Sekiguchi, and Takeru Moriyama played very well and were all over the field."
Tiger goalkeeper Shuma Kawabe stopped all four shots he faced in the win. Cowley has now recorded three shutouts in four games.
"I am very happy with the clean sheets (shutouts)," Vaz said. "The other team can't win if they don't score."
Cowley will step out of conference to play at Bethel College Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Newton, KS.
"We hope to get everyone in the game and continue playing well," Vaz said.
