Box Score Danville, IL – The Highland Men's Basketball team's season comes to an end after a heart wrenching 68-66 loss at the buzzer to Arkansas State Mid-South Friday afternoon in Danville, IL at the NJCAA Division II National Championships.
Arkansas State Mid-South jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead over Highland but two baskets from
Taiveyhon Mason and a bucket by
Alonzo Williams knotted the game up at 8-8.
Jarvis Johnson dished out a nice assist to Williams to take the lead with 13:10 left in the first half.
Highland would weather a couple runs put together by the Greyhounds keeping a 24-17 lead through the under seven media timeout.
After the timeout, Mid-South turned on the jets knocking taking a 27-26 lead with 4:05 to play. The followed that up by knocking down back to back three pointers to take a 22-36 lead.
Holden Redparth hit a three with 2:37 to play but that would be the last points scored in the half for Highland as the Greyhounds went on a 12-5 run in the final four minutes and took a 37-29 lead into the break.
Mid-South scored on their first possession of the second half taking a 10-point lead, but the Highland offense came alive and they regained the lead with 10:58 left in the game.
Neither team was ready for their season to come to an end and it was a back and forth battle with multiple leads changes throughout the remainder of the game.
Holden Redparth hit a deep three from the wing to give Highland a 64-58 lead with 2:26 to play. A Mid-South layup and a big three would bring the Greyhonds within one point with 1:33 seconds left to play.
Mid-South stole the ball from Highland and went the length of the court for an easy layup and took the lead with :55 seconds left in the game. Taiveyon Mason put his head down and drove down the lane scoring a two giving Highland back the lead, 66-65 with :45 left in the contest.
The Highland defense came up with a stop and Mason got fouled and sent to the line. Two missed free throws by Mason gave Mid-South a chance to win with Highland leading 66-65. Mid-South grabbed the rebound on the miss and passed it up the floor to Terrandus Smith who pulled up at the buzzer and knocked down the three for the win.
The Greyhounds end the Scotties season 68-66 on a last second buzzer beater.
Holden Redparth finished his career with a double-double scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Taiveyhon Mason finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Alonzo Williams put up nine points and six rebounds and
Kevin Perry finished with eight.
Highland finishes the season with a record of 26-9, the most wins in program history and is arguably one of the best teams in program history to wear the Navy & Gold. Arkansas State Mid-South will take on the winner of Danville and Erie for a chance at a 5
th place finish in the NJCAA Div. II National Tournament.
