'Dawgs Try To End Tailspin Wednesday At Alvin

ALVIN -- Navarro Softball aims to stop a four-game losing streak here Wednesday when it challenges the Alvin Community College Dolphins in a noon, non-conference doubleheader.

The Bulldogs suffered tough 6-5 losses Monday to Cowley, Ks., and to 10th-ranked Seminole State, Ok., as the Weatherford College Coyote Chillout concluded.

COWLEY 6, NAVARRO 5

NC's seventh-inning uprising left the potential game-tying run at second base, and the Tigers escaped with the one-run win.

NC trailed 6-4 when Faith Fernandez reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Bayja Newby's fourth hit of the day -- a double.  Later, with two out in the inning, pinch-hitter Abby Willis and Harley Davis pieced together consecutive singles to extend the rally .

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead for starter Braylee Forse in the second inning as Newby singled, moved to third on an error and crossed home via a passed ball.

Cowley's three-run third quickly was countered by Navarro in the top of the fourth.  The 'Dawgs took a 4-3 lead as five consecutive batters reached safely.  Singles by Tatum Briggs, Newby and Davis, plus bases-on-balls to Faith Fernandez and Mackenzie Lakey ignited the comeback.

Forse worked three-and-one-third innings and lefthander Kaitlynn Woodlee completed two-and-two-thirds of one-hit shutout relief.

SEMINOLE STATE 6, NAVARRO 5

Seminole State's Trojans rallied with three two-out runs in the seventh and walked off with a 6-5 win over the Bulldogs.

Bobbi Leitha's single to right field enabled courtesy runner P Compton to score the game-winning run from second base as the Trojans completed a 3-1 weekend.  Delania Manning's two-out single delivered Taylor Rowley with the inning's first run.  Winning reliever Julie Kennedy scored the game-tying run when Tatum Winters reached safely via a dropped third strike (passed ball).

Faith Fernandez' one-out, solo homer gave Navarro a first-inning lead, but the Trojans countered with two off starter Brooklynn Swacker and maintined that advantage until the fifth.

That's when the Bulldogs struck for a pair of runs thanks to triples from London Reue and Alanna Islas, plus Tatum Brigg's tiebreaking infield single.

The Bulldogs increased the lead to 4-2 in the sixth when Reue's sacrifice fly plated Newby, who singled to start the inning.

Swacker threw 86 pitches in five-and-one-third innings for NC, yielding seven hits and three earned runs, while striking out six.
