Highland Volleyball Stretches Win Streak to Nine With 4-0 Performance at KCKCC Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Highland volleyball put together another 4-0 showing in tournament play marking the third time this season accomplish that feat as the Scotties picked up four wins at the KCKCC Tournament.

It didn't come easy for the Scotties with some tough sets and a tough five set matchup, also in the tournament. The action opened up on Friday with Highland beating Metropolitan Community College in four sets (25-18, 24-26, 25-15, 25-14). Scotties responded after giving up a lead in set two and falling in the set by taking care of business in sets three and four.

Friday featured back-to-back matchups for Highland in the KCKCC Tournament and the Scotties were plenty warm for the matchup with Neosho County as the Scotties dominated that contest winning 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-19). Highland played one of their best matches of the season and were led by a spectacular career high, 21 kill performance by Emma Cohalla.

After a 2-0 day on Friday, Highland faced off with Waubonsee and Ottawa JV on Saturday at the KCKCC Tournament. In the first match for the Scotties on Saturday it was a tough battle as Highland went five sets with an opponent for just the second time this season and came out on top again beating Waubonsee (25-10, 17-25, 25-17, 18-25, 15-9). Highland traded sets with Waubonsee all the way to a fifth set in which the Scotties took 15-9 to snag the win.

To finish off the tournament Highland took care of Ottawa JV in three sets (25-19, 25-13, 28-26) capping the Tournament with a 4-0 showing.

The 4-0 performance improved the Scotties to 19-2 on the season, stretching their win streak to nine straight matches and moving them to 15-1 in tournament play this season. Highland with will be at home for their next five matches on three evenings starting with a KJCCC matchup against Fort Scott at Ben Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday, September 26th at 5:30pm.

Match One: #9 Highland won 3-1 vs. MCC (25-18, 24-26, 25-15, 25-14)

Highland opened the KCKCC Tournament with the four set win; after taking set one the Scotties led by six early in set two but MCC mounted a comeback and snagged set two. Highland responded to control the next two sets and win the match. Seven different players had two more kills with Lee Sexton leading the way with 15 kills, while Cajia Allen tallied 12 and had a double-double with 14 digs. Katie Pearson had 40 assists and added a pair of kills in the win, while Myla Turner added 22 digs.

Match Two: #9 Highland won 3-0 vs. Neosho County (25-20, 25-18, 25-19)

Scotties played perhaps one of their best matches of the season against fellow KJCCC team in Neosho County controlling the match basically they whole time despite Neosho's efforts. Emma Cohalla dominated at the net recording a career high 21 kills and added three aces, two digs and a pair of blocks to round out the performance. Katie Pearson again was strong at setter with 43 assists and had 11 digs and two more kills. On defense Myla Turner and Kirsten Johnson each notched double figure digs with 19 and 13, respectively. Both Cajia Allen and Lee Sexton each had eight kills, while Allen added 10 digs.

Match Three: #9 Highland won 3-2 vs. Waubonsee (25-10, 17-25, 25-17, 18-25, 15-9)

The third match of the tournament proved to be one of the toughest on the season going to five sets with Waubonsee and ultimately picking up the win. The Scotties dominated set one winning in a sizeable fashion but Waubonsee bounced back to take set two to even the match. Teams traded the third and fourth sets forcing a fifth set. The Scotties answered the call in the fifth set and earned the win. Balance was on display again in the match as Lee Sexton had 13 kills, while Cajia Allen posted another double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Hannah Williams recorded nine kills, while Emma Cohalla had seven kills and three aces. Katie Pearson posted 33 assists and eight digs in the win and Myla Turner had double figure digs again with 17.

Match Four: #9 Highland won 3-0 vs. Ottawa JV (25-19, 25-13, 28-26)  

Highland finished the KCKCC Tournament with a straight set sweep of Ottawa JV to finish the tourney 4-0. Emma Cohalla once again led the team in kills recording 16 in the match, while Katie Pearson finished with 29 assists and nine digs. Kirsten Johnson led the defense with 12 digs, while Myla Turner had nine and offensively Hannah Williams had eight kills, Hannah Wagner tallied six kills and Lee Sexton with five kills.
