DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader from Allen

After seeing their 14-game winning streak snapped with a loss to Grayson College on March 14, the DMACC softball team began a new streak by sweeping a doubleheader from Allen County Community College (ACCC) March 15 at Iola, Kan.

The Bears, who moved into the top spot in this week's Division II national rankings from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), won by scores of 9-1 and 7-0 to improve to 16-1 for the season.

Sophomore Abby Husak of Polk City had three hits to pace DMACC in the opener. Freshman Madison Kearns of Glenpool, Okla., had a pair of hits, including a triple, and drove in three runs and sophomore Sami Miller of Mason City collected two RBIs.

DMACC led 1-0 after the first inning and broke a 1-1 tie with a seven-run rally in the fourth inning. The Bears closed out the win with a run in the fifth and the game was called because of the mercy rule after ACCC batted in the bottom of the inning.

Sophomores Lexi Lander of Onawa and Ellie Jacobson of Humboldt combined on a three-hitter with Lander improving to 4-0 with the win. She went four innings, allowing one run on two hits and struck out four batters. Jacobson went one inning, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Miller hit a home run and a double and drove in two runs in DMACC's win in the second game. Sophomore Delaney Kelley of Rock Island, Ill., also had a pair of RBIs for the Bears. Husak had four hits in the win, Miller came away with three and freshman Emily Ades of Boone had two. Freshman Kendal Clark of Humboldt recorded a triple for DMACC.

DMACC led 1-0 after the first inning, made it a 3-0 game with two runs in the third and put the game away with four runs in the sixth.

Freshman Sydney Kennedy went the distance to pick up her first win of the season. She allowed two hits and struck out 10.

The DMACC softball team will play a doubleheader against Johnson County Community College (JCCC) today at Overland Park, Kan. JCCC is ranked eighth in NJCAA Division II.
