Liberal, KS-One mistake cost Garden City dearly in the final minutes on Wednesday.
Ryoga Oki was issued a yellow card following an aggressive tackle in the 86th minute, Felipe Flores connected on the ensuing penalty kick, and Seward County beat the Broncbusters, 1-0 at Redskin Field.
The loss dropped Garden City to 6-5-3 overall and 1-5-2 in conference. They have now lost back-to-back league matches since beating Kansas City on Sept. 25.
This was a physical game from the start with the officials handing out 12 cards including two yellows to the Saints' Juan Lopera.
That physical nature spilled over into the final minutes when Seward County was on the attack. Leonardo Anez controlled the ball just right of the box, maneuvered around Felipe Pugas; then rolled a pass to a streaking Flores. Once the freshman forward possessed the ball, Oki slid in from behind with what appeared to be a solid tackle. Unfortunately, the officials saw it differently.
After some discussion, Oki was issued a yellow card. On the penalty kick, Garden City keeper, Axcel Padilla guessed wrong, diving to his right as Flores knocked it in to the left corner of the goal, securing Seward County's sixth win of the year.
The Saints outshot the Broncbusters, 12-7, and Padilla had four saves.
