In his final season as head coach of the Cowley College men and women's track and field teams, Mark Phillips is leaving coaching on top as he helped guide the Tiger men to its first Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division Indoor Championship in eight years. For his efforts at the Conference/Region Indoor Championships held Saturday and Sunday in Pittsburg, KS, Phillips was named the Men's Indoor Coach of the Year.
"This is a testament to Coach Phillips' resilience as a person and all of the efforts of coaches and people around our program that want to make a difference and want to see how good we can be," Cowley assistant coach Cameron Rieth said.
The Cowley men finished five points better than Fort Scott in the conference. The Tigers were led by Dawson Crawley finishing as the conference and region champion in the 1,000-meter run, and Jeff Thawinitkul finishing as conference and region champion in the pole vault.
"We had a Great Region VI/Jayhawk Conference meet," Cowley head coach Mark Phillips said. "We are very proud of our team and the way they competed. Some did more than we thought they would to help the team out."
Cloud County was the men and women's region champion. The Tiger men placed third in the region, while the Lady Tigers finished fifth in the region.
Cowley assistant coach Cameron Rieth was pleased with the teams' efforts.
"As I believe we have the toughest region, top to bottom in the nation, I am humbled by all of our team's efforts across the board," Rieth said.
Other Tiger men to be named Jayhawk East champions were Adrian Diaz-Lopez in the 5,000-meter run and mile run, Amos Pkiach in the 3,000-meter run, Diego Andres-Dugan in the 60-meter hurdles and triple jump, and Jack Mull in the heptathlon.
Diaz-Lopez's time of 14:35.25 in the 5,000-meter run was just shy of a new school record, while the Tiger men's 4x800-meter relay team were also conference champions.
The Lady Tigers placed second to only Fort Scott in the conference thanks to Lubna Suied being pronounced the top point getter in the women's meet as she was the conference and region champion in the 3,000-meter run and mile run, and was also the conference champion in the 5,000-meter run.
Rieth said this is another testament to Suied's hard work and effort.
"I am very proud of how she handled her rough start after having to isolate for two weeks, then another week coming back from little bit of injury," Rieth said. "She bounced back with a fire in her eye."
Freshman Kassidy Blann was the conference and region champion in the pole vault, while Zinara Lesley was the Jayhawk East champion in the 1,000-meter run. The women's 4x800-meter relay team and distance medley relay team were also conference champions.
Cowley's national qualifiers will now turn their focus to competing at the NJCAA National Indoor Championship March 5-6 in Pittsburg, KS.
